Now The People
Now the People! ( da, Det er Folkets tur Nu; french: link=no, Maintenant le Peuple ! fi, Nyt on Ihmisten Vuoro!; pt, Agora o Povo !; es, Ahora la Gente; sv, Det är folkets tur nu) is a political movement in the European Union. It was founded in April 2018 by a declaration from Catarina Martins from the Portuguese party Bloco de Esquerda, Pablo Iglesias from the Spanish party Podemos, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise main French socialist party. After discussions about the austerity policy of the Greek government under Alexis Tsipras and his Syriza party, the leaders of the leftist La France insoumise departed the Party of the European Left, joined by Iglesias and Podemos as well as Martins and Bloco. In June 2018, the Danish Red–Green Alliance, Finnish Left Alliance and the Swedish Left Party co-operated with the French Maintenant le Peuple ! (MLP). The Party of the European Left (PEL), commonly abbreviated European Left, is a European political party that operates as an association of democratic socialist and communist political parties in the European Union and other European countries. It was formed in January 2004 for the purposes of running in the 2004 European Parliament elections. The PEL was founded on 8–9 May 2004 in Rome. The elected MEPs from member parties of the PEL sit in The Left in the European Parliament – GUE/NGL group in the European Parliament. Several member and observer parties participate also in the more radical European Anti-Capitalist Left. The Second Cabinet of Alexis Tsipras was sworn in on 23 September 2015, following the Greek legislative election in September 2015. Alexis Tsipras, leader of Syriza, was sworn in as Prime Minister of Greece on 21 September, having agreed to re-form the coalition with Panos Kammenos and the Independent Greeks. On 16 June 2018 the Hellenic Parliament rejected motion of no confidence against the government with a 127-153 vote. Sira Abed Rego (; born 20 November 1973) is a Spanish dietitian and politician affiliated with United Left (IU) who has served as Minister of Youth and Children in the Government of Spain since 2023. Rego was a Member of the European Parliament between 2019 and 2023. Career As an MEP she was nominated as European United Left–Nordic Green Left's candidate for President of the European Parliament, placing fourth in the election held on 3 July 2019. The 2019 European Parliament election was held between 23 and 26 May 2019, the ninth parliamentary election since the first direct elections in 1979. A total of 751 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) represent more than 512 million people from 28 member states. In February 2018, the European Parliament had voted to decrease the number of MEPs from 751 to 705 if the United Kingdom were to withdraw from the European Union on 29 March 2019. However, the United Kingdom participated alongside other EU member states after an extension of Article 50 to 31 October 2019; therefore, the allocation of seats between the member states and the total number of seats remained as it had been in 2014. It was launched in December 2017 as a left-wing joint electoral list of anti-capitalist parties and movements which ran in the 2018 general election. The Left Party ( sv, Vänsterpartiet ; V) is a socialist political party in Sweden. On economic issues, the party opposes privatizations and advocates increased public expenditure. The Left Alliance was founded in 1990 as the chief successor of the left-wing Finnish People's Democratic League (SKDL).
