Noun is the solo musical project of Screaming Females lead guitar player Marissa Paternoster. Paternoster started recording as Noun in 2004 and had a track featured on the ''I Heard This First'' CD compilation, her first release was a 2009 self-released cassette called ''Forgotten Grin'' compiling 5 years' worth of material, reissued on Don Giovanni Records in 2013. Noun's first full length, ''Holy Hell'' was released in 2010 by Don Giovanni Records. In a 2012 list Marissa Paternoster was named the 77th-greatest guitarist of all time by ''SPIN'' magazine. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Don Giovanni Records is an independent record label originally specializing in punk rock from the New Brunswick, New Jersey music scene but eventually working with a variety of artists from different genres. History Don Giovanni Records was founded by Joe Steinhardt and Zach Gajewski while they were living in Boston in 2004. The label is best known for developing artists like Screaming Females, Mitski, Waxahatchee, Laura Stevenson, and Moor Mother, as well as fostering a geographically diverse community of artists, including Mal Blum, Native American Music Award “Best Artist” winner Keith Secola, Holy Modal Rounders founder, Peter Stampfel, Lavender Country, Swamp Dogg, Alice Bag, and comedian Chris Gethard. Screaming Females
Screaming Females is an American rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey comprising Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and Mike Abbate on bass. They released their debut album ''Baby Teeth'' in 2006. The band have been featured on NPR, Last Call with Carson Daly, and MTV. They have played with bands such as Garbage, Throwing Muses, Dinosaur Jr., The Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists and The Breeders. History Formation Paternoster and Abbate formed a band in high school under the name Surgery On TV. After several lineup changes they finally became a trio with Dougherty and changed the name of the band to Screaming Females. Marissa Paternoster
Marissa Paternoster (born August 1, 1986) is an artist, singer and guitarist active in New Jersey's New Brunswick, New Jersey music scene, New Brunswick music scene. She is the lead singer and guitarist in the bands Screaming Females and Noun (band), Noun. Biography Paternoster's parents met while both teachers for the Elizabeth Public Schools. Her mother, Leslie Okun, who Paternoster has described as "culturally Jews, Jewish", was an art teacher who now resides in Florida. Her father, Angelo Paternoster, gave her her first guitar lessons before she taught herself to play as a teen. Paternoster grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey and attended Roselle Catholic High School and later Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts, where she became interested in music and formed Screaming Females.
