Norwegian National Women's Council
The Norwegian National Women's Council ( no, italic=no, Norske Kvinners Nasjonalråd) was founded on 8 January 1904 as an umbrella organization for the various Norwegian women's associations. It was established by Gina Krog whose international contacts had revealed that the International Council of Women was keen to include a delegation from Norway. As a result of diminishing interest, the organization discontinued its work at the end of 1989. Background Gina Krog had been preparing an agenda for the Women's Council in the "Help Committee" (Hjelpekomité) she had run until it was dissolved in 1902. The council brought together the interests of Norway's women's associations with the expectation of the Labour Party's Women's Federation (Arbeiderpartiets kvindeforbund). One of the areas of concern was the white slave trade (now known as trafficking), which had first been raised at the Nordic Women's Day meeting in Christiania in 1902. Julie Therese "Julla" Sæthern (4 December 1901 – 1981) was a Norwegian barrister, feminist and politician. She was born in Eidskog to Lauritz Sæthern and Martha Nilsson, and graduated as cand.jur. in 1938. Grethe Værnø
Grethe Kathrine Værnø, née Jacobsen, (born 1938) is a Norwegian Conservative politician and writer who has played an important part in support of women's rights, both nationally and internationally. She headed the Norwegian National Women's Council from 1979 to 1981 and was Oslo's member of the Storting from 1981 to 1985. Biography Born on 17 October 1938 in Oslo, Grethe Kathrine Jacobsen was the daughter of the factory director Klaus Jacobsen (1899-1980) and Gerda Reusch. After matriculating from high school, she trained as a secretary at the Oslo Commerce School. After studying French in Paris, she attended Harvard University (1966-1967), graduating in Norway in 1969 as Cand.philol. She was married to Norway's foreign minister and ambassador Oscar Johan Værnø (1930-1993). Anna Louise Beer
Anna Louise Beer (1924–2010) was a Norwegian lawyer, judge and women's rights activist who was president of the Norwegian National Women's Council from 1973 to 1979. Legal career She studied law at the University of Oslo and graduated in 1949. She then worked in the Ministry of Justice and Police, was an assistant judge and was admitted to the bar in 1957. Since 1964 she was legal secretary at the Supreme Court, i.e. legal advisor to the court. From 1972 she was a judge at the probate court in Oslo and from 1988 to 1994 president of the court. She was a candidate for a seat on the Supreme Court in the 1970s, but was never appointed. She published several books on inheritance law. Astri Rynning
Astri Sverdrup Rynning (born 19 May 1915 in Sandefjord, died 17 November 2006) was a Norwegian judge and politician representing the Conservative Party. She served as a Member of Parliament 1965–1969; originally elected as a deputy member, she became an MP when Kåre Willoch was appointed to Cabinet. She was a member of the Standing Committee on Justice during her term. Rynning obtained the cand.jur. in 1940 and worked as an assistant advocate and assistant judge. In 1945, she was employed at the Ministry of Justice, where she became Principal in 1956. She was appointed judge at Oslo District Court in 1963, and judge at Eidsivating Court of Appeal in 1969. She was appointed to the higher office of Lawspeaker in 1978 and Principal Lawspeaker in 1980. She retired from the bench in 1985, but occasionally served as a judge until she reached the age of 75 years.
