The Norwegian Historical Association ( no, Den norske historiske forening, HIFO) is a Norwegian historical organization. The Association was founded in 1869 by Michael Birkeland and Ludvig Ludvigsen Daae. It works to promote historical research and to strengthen history in higher education and in public. Its publishes the academic journal ''Historisk Tidsskrift (Norway), Historisk Tidsskrift'', which it commenced in 1871. The association also publishes the magazine ''Historikeren''. Additionally the association is co-owner of ''Scandinavian Journal of History''. In 1990, the association merged with the organizations ''Norsk historikerforening'' (founded 1982) and ''Norsk komité for historisk vitskap'' (founded 1927). History (derived ) is the systematic study and the documentation of the human activity. The time period of event before the invention of writing systems is considered prehistory. "History" is an umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of these events. Michael Birkeland
Michael Birkeland (16 December 183024 May 1896) was a Norwegian historian, civil servant and politician. He was born at Eigersund in Rogaland, Norway. In 1855, he was awarded his cand. jur. at the University of Christiania (now University of Oslo). In 1852, he became an assistant in the National Archives of Norway (''Riksarkivet''). In 1863, he took over the position of national archivist. He co-founded the Norwegian Historical Association in 1869, and edited the academic journal '' Historisk Tidsskrift'' from 1869 to 1879. He was a member of the Storting from 1880 to 1885. Ludvig Ludvigsen Daae
Ludvig Ludvigsen Daae (7 December 1834 – 17 March 1910) was a Norwegian historian and author. He was a professor at the University of Oslo for more than thirty years. Biography He was born in Aremark in Østfold and died in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. He was the son of Ludvig Daae (1806–35) and Sara Jessine Louise Brock (1811–91). He was a student at Christiania Cathedral School and graduated during 1852. He studied classical philology at the University of Kristiania (now University of Oslo) and graduated in 1859. Daae was assigned as a professor at the University of Kristiania for more than thirty years from 1876 to 1910. Daae was appointed professor of history at the University after Oluf Rygh had transferred to a professorship in archeology. The Scandinavian Journal of History is a peer-reviewed journal in English, published since 1976 under the auspices of the historical associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It aims to survey themes in recent Scandinavian historical research, concentrating on national particularities and developments. According to the publisher, it strives to give priority to efforts of placing Scandinavian developments into a larger context, that is studies explicitly comparing Scandinavian processes and phenomena to those in other parts of the world.
