Norwalk City Hall
The former Norwalk City Hall, located in South Norwalk was built in 1912. The building has since been added, on March 23, 1995, to the National Register of Historic Places. Norwalk's city hall is now located at 125 East Avenue. After Norwalk's City Hall relocated, the first and second floors of the structure became ''Norwalk Historical Society Museum'', which was operated by the city. As a museum, the building contained archival materials and other items related to Norwalk's culture and history, including documents, items of significance to the history of Norwalk and artwork. In May 2012, the city removed funding for operation of the museum as well for the cost of renting the building, no longer owned by the city, despite the several thousand visitors annually. South Norwalk
South Norwalk is a neighborhood in Norwalk, Connecticut which corresponds to the city's Second Taxing District. Often referred to as SoNo, the neighborhood was originally settled as Old Well, then chartered as the city of South Norwalk on August 18, 1870. The cities of Norwalk and South Norwalk were incorporated on June 6, 1913. South Norwalk underwent major redevelopment during the early 21st century, with many new apartments being constructed, often in close proximity to South Norwalk station, and generally more expensive than existing housing. South Norwalk is a diverse neighborhood both from a socioeconomic and racial perspective. The neighborhood hosts the annual SoNo Arts Festival, an event that showcases local artists, businesses, and musical acts. The history of Norwalk, Connecticut ranges from pre-contact cultures and Native Americans to the 21st century. Population Pre-Contact During an era when Native Americans had discovered the New World, Native Americans had unquestionably inhabited the area later recorded in history as Norwalk, Connecticut. Even before then many, but not all, such cultures of indigenous people came, dwelled, hunted wild animals for food, and left the area sporadically through time. Artifacts, discarded and left behind now identified by archaeologists as being consistent with cultures as far back as the earliest known peoples of North American.
