Northwest Piscataquis is an unincorporated area in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 134 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 1,632.0 square miles (4,226.8 km2), of which 1,372.4 square miles (3,554.5 km2) is land and 259.6 square miles (672.3 km2) (15.91%) is water. Several lakes of the North Maine Woods are located partially or completely in Northwest Piscataquis, including Telos Lake, Moosehead Lake, and Chesuncook Lake. Northwest Piscataquis also contains Big Spencer Mountain and Mount Kineo. The territory contains 41 townships and parts of ten other townships (shared with Northeast Piscataquis). Telos Lake
Chamberlain Lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the North Maine Woods. The lake originally drained north through Eagle Lake and Churchill Lake into the Allagash River tributary to the Saint John River. Nineteenth-century logging operations diverted the lake into the Penobscot River before designation of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in 1966. History Telos Lake drained into the south end of Chamberlain Lake until the Telos Cut was excavated in 1841 to allow Telos Lake to drain east into Webster Lake and the Penobscot River. In the 1850s Eben S. Coe built the timber crib Lock Dam across the outlet from Chamberlain Lake causing Chamberlain Lake to overflow southward through Round Pond, Telos Lake, Webster Lake and Webster Brook into the East Branch Penobscot River in Baxter State Park. Northeast Piscataquis is an unincorporated area in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The population was 304 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 1,820.4 square miles (4,714.8 km2), of which, 1,710.5 square miles (4,430.3 km2) of it is land and 109.8 square miles (284.5 km2) of it (6.03%) is water. The territory contains 42 townships plus parts of ten other townships (shared with Northwest Piscataquis). Mount Kineo
Mount Kineo is a prominent geological feature located on a peninsula that extends from the easterly shore of Moosehead Lake in the northern forest of Maine. With cliffs rising straight up from the water, it is the central feature of Mount Kineo State Park, a protected area of managed by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. History ; Native American Native Americans once traveled great distances to Mt. Kineo to acquire its rhyolite rock. The mountain is said to contain one of the largest formations of rhyolite in the world. Big Spencer Mountain
Big Spencer Mountain is a mountain located in Piscataquis County, Maine. Big Spencer Mtn. is flanked to the west by Little Spencer Mountain. The southwest end of Big Spencer Mountain drains into Kidney Brook, then into Lobster Lake, and into the West Branch of the Penobscot River, and into Penobscot Bay. The northeast end of Big Spencer Mountain drains into spring-fed Blood Pond where the pond's outlet, Maxfield Brook, then empties into Lobster Lake. Part of the southeast side of Big Spencer Mountain drains into Bear Brook, then into Ragged Lake, Ragged Stream, Caribou Lake, Chesuncook Lake, Ripogenus Lake, and into the West Branch Penobscot River. Chesuncook Lake
Chesuncook Lake is a reservoir in Piscataquis County, Maine, within the North Maine Woods. The lake was formed by the damming of the West Branch Penobscot River by dams built in 1835, 1903, and 1916 respectively. It is approximately long and 1–4 miles wide, with a surface area of and a maximum depth of . It is the third-largest body of fresh water in Maine. The lake was named "goose place" by combining the call of the Canada goose ''schunk'' with ''auke'' (the Abenaki word for place) to form Chesuncook.
