Northern Ohio School
The Northern Ohio School is a historic school building at 60 Arkansas Highway 184 in Parkin, Arkansas. It is a small wood-frame structure, clad in clapboards, with a corrugated metal roof, set on the south side of the highway just beyond the northern boundary of Parkin Archeological State Park. The school was built c. 1910 by the Northern Ohio Cooperage and Lumber Company as an educational facility for the children of its African-American workers. The building was converted to a residence in 1951 after the company closed down its operations. It was sold to the state, as a buffer property for the adjacent park, in 1998. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It appears to be a one-room schoolhouse building. Parkin, Arkansas
Parkin is a city in Cross County, Arkansas, United States, along the St. Francis River. The population was 1,105 at the 2010 census, down from 1,602 in 2000. Due to the recent population loss, a large segment of the downtown area has many abandoned and boarded-up buildings. The town has recently become known as a speed trap. Geography Parkin is located in eastern Cross County at (35.265392, -90.554880), on the east bank of the St. Francis River just south of the mouth of the Tyronza River. Highway 184 (AR 184, Ark. 184, and Hwy. 184) is an east–west state highway in the Arkansas Delta. The route begins at US Highway 64 (US 64) in Parkin and runs east to US 64 in Earle. The route is maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Route description Highway 184 begins at US 64 near Parkin Archaeological State Park, a state park dedicated to preserve Indian mounds. Parkin Archeological State Park
Parkin Archeological State Park, also known as Parkin Indian Mound, is an archeological site and state park in Parkin, Cross County, Arkansas. Around 1350–1650 CE an aboriginal palisaded village existed at the site, at the confluence of the St. Francis and Tyronza rivers. Artifacts from this site are on display at the site museum. The Parkin site is the type site for the Parkin phase, an expression of the Mississippian culture from the Late Mississippian period. Many archeologists believe it to be part of the province of ''Casqui'', documented as visited by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1542. Archeological artifacts from the village of the Parkin people are dated to 1400–1650 CE. The Parkin site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964 for its significance as a type site of the Parkin phase.
