Northern Indiana Conference
The Northern Indiana Conference (NIC) is a high school athletic conference that was founded in 1927 and spanned from as far west as Hammond and Gary to South Bend/Mishawaka and Elkhart to the east and south to Plymouth. Since its start in 1927, a total of 32 separate schools have at one time called the NIC home. From its inception until 1963, the conference had been divided into East and West divisions. The West Division (as well as Valparaiso) left to form the Northwestern Conference in 1963. With membership dwindling to 7 members by the 1970s, the conference added former members of the Northern Indiana Valley Conference to its ranks. Currently, every former NIVC member is now a part of the NIC except for South Bend Jackson, which closed in 1973, and South Bend LaSalle, which joined the NIC in 1977, but closed in 2001. Walkerton, Indiana
Walkerton is a town in Lincoln Township, St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,144 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the South Bend–Mishawaka, IN- MI, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Walkerton was platted in 1856. It was named for John Walker, a railroad promoter. The town was laid out by the railroad surveyors and the first lot was taken by C.W.N. Stephens, Walkerton's first postmaster. Stephens relocated his general store from nearby West York. The Walkerton post office has been in operation since 1860. During World War II Walkerton housed some of the workers for the nearby Kingsbury Ordnance Plant. The plant initially sought 10,000 workers, and the entire population of LaPorte numbered only 16,000 in 1940. In August 1941 Kingsbury's first shells were loaded and en route to the front lines. East Chicago, Indiana
East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,698 at the 2010 census. The city is home of the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, an artificial freshwater harbor characterized by industrial and manufacturing activity. Situated along Lake Michigan, East Chicago is about 18 miles from downtown Chicago, Illinois and is just west of Gary, Indiana. History The land that became East Chicago was originally swampland unsuitable for farming. The state of Indiana began selling off plots of land to railroads and speculators after 1851 to fund the local school system. Washington High School is a public high school in South Bend, Indiana, United States. It is part of the SBCSC magnet program, where it is the Medical/Allied Health Magnet strain. History Washington High School first opened its doors in 1938, moving to its current location on February 1, 1960. The project had been started in 1956, when the financing for the building was allocated. Approximately $4,000,000 dollars were set aside for the construction. Maurer and Maurer architectural firm was hired to build the facility, and ground breaking occurred on October 22, 1958. Since 1959, the building has undergone some changes. A second gymnasium has been added, along with updates to the athletic fields. Beginning in 2002, a massive school renovation began. New Carlisle is a suburban village in Olive Township, St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,861 at the 2010 Census.
