Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest
Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest is a Wisconsin state forest of more than across Vilas, Oneida, and Iron counties in north-central Wisconsin. The state forest includes numerous lakes, rivers, and streams. The most prominent rivers are the Wisconsin, Flambeau, and Manitowish. The state forest supports a large variety of outdoor recreation activities including camping, hiking, snowmobiling, bicycling, boating, fishing, hunting, and birdwatching. In addition to recreational activities the state forest also hosts a number of research programs. The forest is a state-managed timber resource providing opportunities for commercial logging, individual firewood collection, and individual Christmas tree harvesting. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) is a government agency of the U.S. state of Wisconsin charged with conserving and managing Wisconsin's natural resources. Raven Trail
The Raven Trail is a recreational trail in Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest in Woodruff, Wisconsin. The trail has five loops available for use. The Yellow Loop is long. No pets are allowed on this loop. The Green and Blue Loops are both miles long and rated intermediate difficulty. The Red Loop is long and is rated expert. Little Rock Lake is a lake in Vilas County, Wisconsin. It is located in the Northern Highland–American Legion State Forest and administered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Characteristics Little Rock Lake is a 0.16 km2 (40 acre) mesotrophic lake formed by glacial processes 10,000 to 25,000 years ago. The lake consists of two main basins that are separated by a narrow water passage. It is typically frozen over from late fall to early spring. Ecology The surrounding region and canopy over the lake is a mix of hardwood and coniferous forests, including speckled alder, white pine, and white and black spruce trees.
