Northern Cyprus National Basketball Team
The Northern Cyprus national basketball team is the basketball team of Northern Cyprus. The team is not affiliated to FIBA, so only plays friendly games. History Northern Cyprus's first match was played on 25 January 2006, against Kyrgyzstan. The team won by 84–78. In May 2015, the team played two matches against Abkhazia national team in Northern Cyprus, invited by the TRNC Federation. The team won their second match by 59–47, while the third match was cancelled. In 2021, the team played two friendly matches against Kyrgyzstan. Northern Cyprus won the first of them. Kyrenia
Kyrenia ( el, Κερύνεια ; tr, Girne ) is a city on the northern coast of Cyprus, noted for its historic harbour and castle. It is under the ''de facto'' control of Northern Cyprus. While there is evidence showing that the wider region of Kyrenia has been populated before, the city was built by the Greeks named Achaeans from the Peloponnese after the Trojan War (1300 BC). According to Greek mythology, Kyrenia was founded by the Achaeans Cepheus and Praxandrus who ended up there after the Trojan War. The heroes gave to the new city the name of their city of Kyrenia located in Achaia, Greece. As the town grew prosperous, the Romans established the foundations of its castle in the 1st century AD. North Nicosia or Northern Nicosia ( tr, Kuzey Lefkoşa ; el, Βόρεια Λευκωσία) is the capital and largest city of the ''de facto'' state of Northern Cyprus. There are 29 sports federations in Northern Cyprus and 13,838 people registered in them as of 2008. Taekwondo- karate-aikido-kurash is the most popular sport with 6054 athletes. It is followed by association football (2240 athletes), shooting (1150 athletes) and hunting (1017 athletes). Due to the lack of international recognition, Northern Cyprus is not a member of some international sporting bodies. Some Northern Cyprus sport clubs participate in Turkey's sport leagues.
