The ''Northern Argus'', first published on 19 February 1869, is a newspaper printed in Clare, South Australia. It was later sold to Rural Press, previously owned by Fairfax Media, but now an Australian media company trading as Australian Community Media. History The ''Northern Argus'' newspaper (as distinct from the ''Southern Argus'' published in Strathalbyn) was founded by Alfred Clode and his brother-in-law Henry Hammond Tilbrook (c. 1848– 9 September 1937). The first issue was greeted with polite silence by other newspapers, most saying nothing more than it was "the same size as the ''Wallaroo Times''". Clare, South Australia
The town of Clare is located in South Australia in the Mid North region, 136 km north of Adelaide. It gives its name to the Clare Valley wine and tourist region. At the , Clare itself had a population of 3160 as part of an urban area with 3327 people. History The first European to explore the district was John Hill, who in April 1839 discovered and named the Wakefield River and Hutt River. In early 1840 the first European settlers arrived in the district, led by John Horrocks. The town itself was established in 1842 by Edward Burton Gleeson, and named after his ancestral home of County Clare in Ireland, although the town was first named Inchiquin after Gleeson's property. Lake Inchiquin is now the name of a reservoir located to the north of the town, near the golf club. The layout of the town's road system was apparently designed by a draughtsman in Adelaide, without any knowledge of the local geography. Strathalbyn, South Australia
Strathalbyn is a town in South Australia, in the Alexandrina Council. As of 2016, the town had a population of approximately 6,500. Henry Hammond Tilbrook
Henry Hammond Tilbrook (1848–1937) was a Welsh-born Australian landscape photographer, inventor and traveller, who later in life co-founded the ''Northern Argus'' newspaper in the Clare region of South Australia. Biography Tilbrook was born in Llandudno, Wales, in 1848. His father was a gamekeeper originally from Weston Colville, Cambridgeshire. When Tilbrook was about six years old, the family sailed to South Australia on the ''Albermarle''. He worked for a short time as a typesetter at the ''Register'' in Adelaide, as well as working as a lamb minder for a short time. Enticed by the gold rush at the time, Tilbrook moved to New Zealand to try to make a living prospecting. After having no luck with gold, he moved on to work for the ''Grey River Argus'' in Greymouth. Wallaroo Times
The ''Kadina and Wallaroo Times'' was a newspaper published in Kadina, and also serving the nearby Wallaroo, South Australia from August 1888 to August 1966. In 1968 the paper merged to form the ''Yorke Peninsula Country Times''. History With the 1861 discovery of copper at a property in the northern Yorke Peninsula, the town of Kadina quickly grew to 8,000. Brothers David and Andrew Fyfe Taylor, and George Thompson Clarkson founded the newspaper in the nearby port of Wallaroo in 1865. The newspapers mainly focused on reporting the happenings in these two towns and nearby Moonta. Editorial opinion was generally politically conservative and supportive of free trade. It opposed miners' strikes and in particular opposed to Premier Charles Kingston. Some early editions of the paper contained articles written in Welsh.
