Newton is a town in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,241 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated communities of Clover, Duveneck, Newton, Newtonburg, and Northeim are located in the town. The unincorporated community of Rube is also located partially in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.5 square miles (91.9 km2), of which, 34.1 square miles (88.2 km2) of it is land and 1.4 square miles (3.7 km2) of it (3.97%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 2,241 people, 795 households, and 631 families residing in the town. The population density was 65.8 people per square mile (25.4/km2). The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. "Fritz" Schmitz (December 25, 1820 – February 8, 1905) was an American musician and farmer from Northeim, Wisconsin, Northeim, Wisconsin who served a single term as a Reform Party (19th century Wisconsin), Reform Party member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, Manitowoc County. Background Schmitz was born in Hamm, Province of Westphalia in Prussia on December 25, 1820, to a "well-situated" family. He was educated in a public school (government funded), city school. In 1847 he came to the United States with two of his brothers. The Schmitz brothers, all musically trained, joined the orchestra of an itinerant theatre touring theatre, company and travelled throughout the United States. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
