North York Rockets
The North York Rockets were a professional soccer team based in North York, Toronto, Ontario that competed in the original Canadian Soccer League. They were one of four teams to participate in every season of the CSL. Upon the demise of the CSL, the Rockets joined the Canadian National Soccer League. History Canadian Soccer League The North York Rockets were formed by a group consisting of Gus Mandarino, Basil Policaro, Tony Ciamarra, Joe D'Urzo, Mario Rollo, and Mario Giangioppo to play in the inaugural season of the Canadian Soccer League in 1987. In their debut league match, the Rockets tied the Toronto Blizzard, by a score of 1-1. The Rockets's best result came in 1991 when they defeated the Nova Scotia Clippers with a 9-1 goal aggregate to advance to the league cup semi-finals. Esther Shiner Stadium
Esther Shiner Stadium is a multi-purpose outdoor sports facility in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the former city of North York, on the north-west corner of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue West. Its capacity is 3,00and is currently the home of North Toronto Nitros of League1 Ontario and FC Vorkuta of the Canadian Soccer League. York University's football team were former tenants of the stadium from the 1980s to 1995 until a football field was built on campus (see York Stadium). The stadium plays host to many sporting events including Canadian football, soccer, and athletics. David Byrne (footballer, Born 1960)
David Byrne is an English-born South African soccer coach and former professional player. He was in 1982 and 1984 a top ten scorer in the North American Soccer League. Player Professional The son of former England international and West Ham United star Johnny Byrne, Byrne was born in England, but raised in Cape Town. In 1979, Byrne moved to the United States where he joined the Atlanta Chiefs just in time for the 1979–1980 North American Soccer League indoor season. He continued to play for the Chiefs until 1981 when he moved to the Toronto Blizzard where he played one indoor and three outdoor seasons. He finished the 1982 season ninth on the scoring list with 39 points in 32 games. Shel Brodsgaard
Shel Brodsgaard (born May 29, 1970) is a Canadian former professional goalkeeper. Early life Brodsgaard began playing soccer with the Gorge Youth Soccer Association and represented British Columbia at U16 and U18 Provincial All-Star levels. Career He signed his first professional contract at age 15, with the Edmonton Brick Men of the Canadian Soccer League. He later played with the Victoria Vistas, Nova Scotia Clippers, and North York Rockets. He also played with the Tacoma Stars of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also played for the Winnipeg Fury and Danish side Hvidovre IF. Prior to joining the Rockets, he had a trial with Danish club Boldklubben 1909. Ian Bridge
Ian Christopher Bridge (born 18 September 1959) is a football coach and former professional who played as a defender. A former player for the Canada national team, he has coached the Canada women's national team among other teams. Club career Bridge was born in Victoria, British Columbia. He began his pro career in 1977 and played in the NASL with the Seattle Sounders from 1979 to 1983 and with the Vancouver Whitecaps in 1984, and MISL indoor soccer with the Tacoma Stars. Over six NASL seasons he played 124 games and scored 13 goals. Following the demise of the NASL Bridge played for Swiss club FC La Chaux-de-Fonds for two seasons when the club was in the Swiss league first division. Massimo Briaschi
Massimo Briaschi (born 12 May 1958) is a former Italian professional footballer and FIFA sports agent. Throughout his career he played as a forward. A hard-working and versatile player, he was capable of playing both as a striker and on the wing. He is mostly remembered for his time with Juventus, where he won several honours. Eddy Berdusco
Eddy Berdusco (born 8 September 1969) is a Canadian retired professional soccer player. A former forward, he began his career in the Canadian Soccer League, where he finished as the third all-time highest goalscorer. After the demise of the CSL he spent some time abroad in Europe, China, before returning to North America to play with the Milwaukee Rampage. Berdusco would spend the remainder of his career in the Canadian Professional Soccer League, winning several team championships with the Toronto Olympians, and retiring with the Toronto Supra in 2002. Berdusco also played internationally for Canada and scored one of its most memorable goals in a friendly against Brazil in 1994. Oscar Albuquerque
Oscar Albuquerque (born September 4, 1954) is a Canadian former soccer midfielder. He spent most of his professional career playing indoor soccer with U.S. teams. He is currently the president of Pro Soccer International, an ownership group which holds the rights to American Indoor Soccer League teams in Chicago and Rockford, Illinois. Youth and college Albuquerque was born in Lima, Peru. He moved from his native Peru to Toronto, Ontario, Canada with his family when he was fifteen. At the time, his older brother, Hugo Albuquerque, was playing semi-professionally in Canada. 1994 American Professional Soccer League
The 1994 season of the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) was the fifth in the history of the league, which was the top level of club soccer in the United States from 1990 to 1995. It was planned to be contested by eight teams in the U.S. and Canada and took place between July 1 and October 15, partially overlapping with the 1994 FIFA World Cup. The Tampa Bay Rowdies folded and the Toronto Blizzard were replaced by the Toronto Rockets, who were formed from the North York Rockets of the Canadian Soccer League. 1992 Canadian Soccer League Season
The 1992 Canadian Soccer League season was the sixth and final season of play for the Canadian Soccer League, a Division 1 men's soccer league in the Canadian soccer pyramid. Format and changes from previous season Shortly before the 1992 season, the Hamilton Steelers, Nova Scotia Clippers, and Kitchener Kickers folded. The league was not doing well financially either and Montreal Supra owner Frank Aliaga was named the new league president, replacing the interim president Mario DiBartolomeo, who was the owner of the now-folded Hamilton Steelers. 1991 Canadian Soccer League Season
The 1991 Canadian Soccer League season was the fifth season of play for the Canadian Soccer League, a Division 1 men's soccer league in the Canadian soccer pyramid. Format and changes from previous season Prior to the 1991 season, the league placed four franchises under suspension – Ottawa Intrepid, Edmonton Brick Men, Victoria Vistas, and London Lasers – due to financial difficulties. Ultimately, Ottawa, Edmonton, and Victoria folded, while London requested a one-year leave of absence. The 1990 Canadian Soccer League season was the fourth season of play for the Canadian Soccer League, a Division 1 men's soccer league in the Canadian soccer pyramid. Format and changes from previous season The Kitchener Spirit and London Lasers joined the Canadian Soccer League as an expansion teams for the 1990 season, with both joining the East Division. Meanwhile, the Calgary Strikers folded following the 1989 season. As a result of those team changes, the league had a seven-team East Division and a four-team West Division.
