North York Board Of Education
The North York Board of Education (NYBE, commonly known as School District 13), officially the Board of Education for the City of North York is the former public school board for the former city of North York in Ontario, Canada. In 1998, the provincial Government of Ontario passed legislation which amalgamated North York into the City of Toronto. As part of the amalgamation process, the NYBE ceased to exist. Today, administration of schools in North York is handled by the Toronto District School Board. The NYBE building was located at 5050 Yonge Street, in the same complex as Mel Lastman Square, the former North York City Hall. This building now houses the Toronto District School Board offices. North York
North York is one of the six administrative districts of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located directly north of York, Old Toronto and East York, between Etobicoke to the west and Scarborough to the east. As of the 2016 Census, it had a population of 869,401. North York was created as a township in 1922 out of the northern part of the former township of York, a municipality that was located along the western border of Old Toronto. Following its inclusion in Metropolitan Toronto in 1953, it was one of the fastest-growing parts of the region due to its proximity to Old Toronto. It was declared a borough in 1967, and later became a city in 1979, attracting high-density residences, rapid transit, and a number of corporate headquarters in North York City Centre, its central business district. York Mills Collegiate Institute (York Mills C.I., YMCI or York Mills) is a public high school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Toronto District School Board, offering grades 9–12. It is located in North York along York Mills Road between Leslie Street and Bayview Avenue. Prior to 1998, it was part of the North York Board of Education. The school emphasizes university preparation and academics. English and French Immersion courses are provided from grades 9 to 12. Newtonbrook Secondary School (Newtonbrook SS, NSS) is a high school for Grades 9 to 12 in the Newtonbrook neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. History Opened in 1964 by the then North York Board of Education to provide a closer school for the area (formerly served by Earl Haig Secondary School to the south) with 610 pupils. It was officially opened in Winter 1965 by Newtonbrook-born and then Prime Minister of Canada Lester B. Pearson. The building's design resembled Sir Sanford Fleming Academy but alterations occurred years later. It is considered to be one of the more sports-oriented high schools in the Toronto District School Board. Don Mills Collegiate Institute (DMCI) is a high school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located in the Don Mills neighbourhood, it serves an ethnically diverse student population of approximately 1000. As of 2017, 67% of students speak a first language other than English. The school opened in 1959. Location Initially, the board planned to build two separate schools on the site with a shared heating plant, but in October 1957, trustee Dorothy Bishop prepared a report which raised the possibility of saving money by placing the two schools under one roof, as had previously been done in Vancouver and Calgary.
