North Sweden European Office
North Sweden European Office is the joint regional European Union liaison office for the Swedish counties Norrbotten and Västerbotten, the two northernmost counties of Sweden. The main purpose of the office is to contribute and encourage Northern Sweden to become an active and competent region at a European level. The founding organisations are the Municipalities, the County Councils, the County Administration Boards, the Federation of private enterprises and the Chambers of Commerce in Norrbotten and Västerbotten as well as Luleå University of Technology and Umeå University. Norrbotten County
Norrbotten County ( sv, Norrbottens län; se, Norrbottena leatna, fi, Norrbottenin lääni) is the northernmost county or '' län'' of Sweden. It is also the largest county by land area, almost a quarter of Sweden's total area. It shares borders with Västerbotten County to the southwest, the Gulf of Bothnia to the southeast, the counties of Nordland and Troms og Finnmark in Norway to the northwest, and Lapland Province in Finland to the northeast. Västerbotten County ( sv, Västerbottens län) is a county or ''län'' in the north of Sweden. It shares the borders with the counties of Västernorrland, Jämtland, and Norrbotten, as well as the Norwegian county of Nordland and the Gulf of Bothnia. A regional council ( sv, region) is a self-governing local authority. There are 21 regional councils (one of which is a municipality having the same responsibilities as a county council), each corresponding to a county. Regional councils are governed by a regional assembly (''regionfullmäktige'') that is elected by the regional electorate every four years in conjunction with the general elections. The most important responsibilities of regional councils are the public health care system and public transportation. It is one of the principal administrative subdivisions of Sweden. A county administrative board ( sv, länsstyrelse) is a Swedish Government Agency in each of the counties of Sweden, led by a vice-regal governor ( sv, landshövding) appointed by the government for a term of six years. The lists of gubernatorial officeholders, in most cases, stretches back to 1634 when the counties were created by Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna. The main responsibilities of the county administrative board is to coordinate the development of the county in line with goals set in national politics.
