North Schleswig Germans
Approximately 15,000 people in Denmark belong to an autochthonous ethnic German minority traditionally referred to as ''hjemmetyskere'' meaning "domestic Germans" in Danish, and as ''Nordschleswiger'' in German. This minority of Germans hold Danish citizenship and self-identify as ethnic Germans. They generally speak German or Low German alongside South Jutlandic dialect of Danish as their home languages. Furthermore, there are also several thousand German immigrants residing in Denmark with no historical connection to this group. History In 1920, in the aftermath of World War I, two Schleswig Plebiscites were held in the northernmost part of the Prussian Province of Schleswig-Holstein (the northern half of the former Duchy of Schleswig). Flensborg Avis
''Flensborg Avis'' is a Danish language daily newspaper, published in Flensburg ( da, Flensborg), Germany. It regularly cooperates with ''Flensburger Tageblatt'', a German majority newspaper in the city, and ''Der Nordschleswiger'', a German minority newspaper published in Denmark. History and profile ''Flensborg Avis'' was first published on 1 October 1869 in Flensburg by members of the Danish minority in the Province of Schleswig-Holstein. The paper represents the Danish minority in Southern Schleswig. The headquarters of the paper is in Flensburg and there are local editorial offices in the towns of Schleswig (''Slesvig''), Husum and Niebüll (''Nibøl''). The paper is published in Berliner format six times per week. During the Nazi rule in Germany the German supplement of ''Flensborg Avis'', ''Der Schleswiger'', was suspended several times. Southern Schleswig
Southern Schleswig (german: Südschleswig or ', da, Sydslesvig; frr, Söödslaswik) is the southern half of the former Duchy of Schleswig in Germany on the Jutland Peninsula. The geographical area today covers the large area between the Eider (river), Eider river in the south and the Flensburg Fjord in the north, where it borders Denmark. Northern Schleswig, congruent with the former South Jutland County, forms the southernmost part of Denmark. The area belonged to the Denmark, Crown of Denmark until Prussia and Austria declared war on Denmark in 1864. Denmark wanted to give away the German-speaking Holstein, Holsten and set the new border at the small river Ejderen. Folketinget
The Folketing ( da, Folketinget, ; ), also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark—Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Christiansfeld
Christiansfeld, with a population of 2,977 (1 January 2022), is a town in Kolding Municipality in Southern Jutland in Region of Southern Denmark. The town was founded in 1773 by the Moravian Church and named after the Danish king Christian VII. Since July 2015 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its status as the best-preserved example of the town-planning and architecture of the Moravian Church. Description The town was constructed around a central Church Square bordered by two parallel streets running east to west. Former German Territories
The former eastern territories of Germany (german: Ehemalige deutsche Ostgebiete) refer in present-day Germany to those territories east of the current eastern border of Germany i.e. Oder–Neisse line which historically had been considered German and which were annexed by Poland and Soviet Union after World War II, these territories were also the lands where Germans used to be only or main ethnicity.
