North Ormesby
North Ormesby is an area in the town of Middlesbrough, in the Borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. The area has gained the common nickname of Doggy, it is of unknown origin. Population of the North Ormesby and Brambles Farm ward, as taken at the 2011 census, was 6,268. The area became its own ward in 2015. It is situated to the south of the River Tees, the A66 and adjacent to the Cargo Fleet and South Bank areas of Middlesbrough. The Teesdale Way long-distance trail passes just to the north of the area. North Ormesby is located next to Middlesbrough F.C.'s Riverside Stadium and is a popular route for match-goers. Ormesby Hall
Ormesby Hall, a Grade I listed building, is a predominantly 18th-century mansion house built in the Palladian style and completed in 1754. It is situated in Ormesby, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire in the north-east of England. The home of the Pennyman family, originally dating from c.1600, the property has been much modernised. Now described as a "classic Georgian mansion", it comprises a main residential block and an adjacent stable block. The stable block housed the horses of Cleveland Police Mounted Section until their disbandment in December 2013. The Pennyman family, which began acquiring land in Ormesby in the 16th century, bought the Manor of Ormesby in about 1600 from the Conyers/Strangeways family. The Pennyman family then acquired a Baronetcy granted by Charles II for fighting on the side of the royalists in the English Civil War. Grove Hill, Middlesbrough
Grove Hill is an area of the Middlesbrough's Longlands and Beechwood ward in the Borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. It is a historic part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. The area's main shopping area is off Marton Road at the junction with Marton Burn Road and Belle Vue. The majority of the area was within the civil parish of Marton before the area and Marton itself became unparished areas of the town. Marton Grove Primary School served the area for 83 years before its closure in 2011 and demolition in 2012. They are also shops on the other end of Marton Burn Road, at the roundabout with Eastborne, Valley, Bishopton and York roads. These shops formerly had the Palladium cinema, demolished in 1960. Since the early 2000s, the area was subject to a regeneration scheme which saw many houses demolished. Pallister
Pallister is an area in the borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. It is located within the TS3 postcode area. The Pallister Ward (shared with the larger Berwick Hills) had population at the 2011 Census of 6,069, the ward was later renamed in 2015 to Berwick Hills and Pallister. The area, made up of mostly council houses, has developed a reputation over the years for crime and anti-social behaviour, although Middlesbrough Council and Erimus Housing have made it a target to reduce crime rates. Berwick Hills is a suburb in the Borough of Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire, England with a population of 4,465. It is east of Middlesbrough centre. Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Yorkshire. James Smurthwaite
James Smurthwaite (17 October 1916 – 20 October 1989) was an English first-class cricketer, who played seven matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1938 and 1939. Born in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England, Smurthwaite was a fast-medium swing bowler, who could also bowl medium-pace off-breaks. He was a successful bowler for Guisborough in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League before appearing for Yorkshire. In his first first-class match, in 1938, Yorkshire declared and won by an innings, and Smurthwaite neither batted nor bowled; it was his only County Championship match of the season. He is most noted for a spell against Derbyshire at Bramall Lane in June 1939, when he and Frank Smailes routed Derbyshire for 20 on a rain-affected pitch. The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation began in 1943. Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces and may be awarded posthumously. It was previously awarded by countries of the Commonwealth of Nations, most of which have established their own honours systems and no longer recommend British honours. Stanley Elton Hollis VC (21 September 1912 – 8 February 1972) was a British recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He had the distinction of receiving the only Victoria Cross awarded on D-Day (6 June 1944). Background Stanley Hollis was born in Middlesbrough, North Riding of Yorkshire, England, where he lived and attended the local school until 1926; when his parents (Edith and Alfred Hollis) moved to Robin Hood's Bay, where he worked in his father's fish and chip shop. In 1929 he was apprenticed to a Whitby shipping company, to learn to be a Navigation Officer.
