North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra
The North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, formerly the Tupelo Symphony Orchestra, is the resident orchestral performing organization in Tupelo, Mississippi. History The need for a symphony orchestra in Tupelo led to fund-raising efforts, including organization of the community resources initially required for the development of the orchestra, through the leadership of attorney Wade H. Lagrone. The orchestra was founded in 1971. Musical Director and Conductor Steven Byess is the current Music Director and has led the TSO since 2006. He is the Cover Conductor for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Opera Conductor for the Cleveland Institute of Music and the California State University - Los Angeles, in addition to the Conductor at the International Vocal Arts Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel and the former Music Director of the Ohio Light Opera. Tupelo () is a city in and the county seat of Lee County, Mississippi, United States. With an estimated population of 38,300, Tupelo is the sixth-largest city in Mississippi and is considered a commercial, industrial, and cultural hub of North Mississippi. The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) is a private music conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1920 by Ernest Bloch, it enrolls 325 students in the conservatory and approximately 1,500 students in the preparatory and continuing education programs. Louis Lane
Louis Gardner Lane (December 25, 1923 – February 15, 2016) was an American conductor. He was born in Eagle Pass, Texas. He studied composition with Kent Kennan at the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his bachelor's in music degree in 1943, and with Bohuslav Martinů at the Tanglewood Music Center (summer 1946), and with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School of Music (master's degree in music, 1947). He also studied opera with Sarah Caldwell (1950). He was apprentice conductor to George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra in 1947. He became assistant conductor there 1955-1960 and associate conductor 1960-1970 and resident conductor 1970-1973. A comment made by George Szell to Lane in 1957 about the eccentric pianist Glenn Gould became quite famous: “That nut’s a genius”. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is an American orchestra based in Dallas, Texas. Its principal performing venue is the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in the Arts District of downtown Dallas. History The orchestra traces its origins to a concert given by a group of forty musicians in 1900 with conductor Hans Kreissig. It continued to perform and grow in numbers and stature, so that in 1945 it was in a position to appoint Antal Doráti as music director. Under Doráti, the orchestra became fully professional. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is an American orchestra based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The ASO's main concert venue is Atlanta Symphony Hall in the Woodruff Arts Center.
