The Malabar Diocese is one of the twenty-four dioceses of the Church of South India covering the Malabar part of Kerala. The diocese consists of CSI churches in the areas Kannur, Wayanad, Calicut, part of Palakkad district and church in Goa. The cathedral church of the diocese is situated at Calicut and the Bishops House at Calicut History Malabar Diocese was formed by bifurcating the erstwhile North Kerala Diocese in April 2015. In church governance, a diocese or bishopric is the ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop. History In the later organization of the Roman Empire, the increasingly subdivided provinces were administratively associated in a larger unit, the diocese (Latin ''dioecesis'', from the Greek term διοίκησις, meaning "administration"). Christianity was given legal status in 313 with the Edict of Milan. Churches began to organize themselves into dioceses based on the civil dioceses, not on the larger regional imperial districts. The Church of North India (CNI) is the dominant united Protestant church in northern India. It was established on 29 November 1970 by bringing together the Protestant churches working in northern India. It is a province of the worldwide Anglican Communion and a member of the World Methodist Council and the World Communion of Reformed Churches. The East Kerala Diocese is one of the twenty-four dioceses of the Church of South India covering the eastern part of Kerala.The diocese headquarters is at Melukavu, Kottayam. History of the Diocese The Church Missionary Society began work in this area in 1848 and Rev. Henry Baker Junior came as the first missionary. He is now remembered as "The Apostle of the Hills". He taught Christian faith, doctrines to the community and helped them to liberate the clutches of exploitation of others communities. He began baptizing elders in the year 1848 and started the first church at Erumapara. Rev. Michael John was one of the pastors from Melukavu area, was appointed as the special officer for the formation of a new Diocese. The Madhya Kerala Diocese is one of the twenty-four dioceses of the Church of South India (commonly referred to as CSI) (successor of the Church of England) covering the central part of Kerala. When the Church of South India was formed on 27 September 1947, the diocese was called the Diocese of Central Travancore.
