The North Karelian Group (''Pohjois-Karjalan Ryhmä'', ''P-KR'') was a formation of the Finnish Army (1939) during the Winter War. Finnish IV Corps (Winter War)
The IV Corps was a formation of the Finnish Army during the Winter War against the Soviet Union. It defended the area north of Lake Ladoga against Soviet attacks. It was commanded by Major General Juho Heiskanen and from 4 December 1939 by Major General Woldemar Hägglund. The IV Corps defeated superior Soviet troops by using motti tactics. Suomussalmi () is a municipality in Finland and is located in the Kainuu region about northeast of Kajaani, the capital of Kainuu and south of Kuusamo. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Ämmänsaari is the biggest built-up area in the municipality. Suomussalmi is the second southernmost part of the reindeer-herding area in Finland. A pocket is a group of combat forces that have been isolated by opposing forces from their logistical base and other friendly forces.
