North East (Glasgow Ward)
North East (Ward 21) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the ward boundaries were redrawn with a smaller size and population, and it returned three members. Boundaries Located in the far north-east of Glasgow, the core of the ward since 2007 includes neighbourhoods between the M8 motorway and the city boundary with North Lanarkshire: Easterhouse, Provanhall, Garthamlock, Craigend, Ruchazie, Hogganfield, Provanmill and Blackhill as well as the village of Gartloch, all bordered by open ground, much of which is within the Seven Lochs Wetland Park. Provanmill
Provanmill is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It lies to the north east of the city centre. In the mid-19th century it was a small hamlet with a grain mill, blacksmith's, cartwright's and hostelry. As Glasgow expanded, it became part of the city. Since the 1950s, the area became a major area of deprivation, with chronic housing and drug-related crime problems, although in the early 21st century the image of Provanmill and its surrounding areas is improving. Blackhill, one of the most notorious housing estates in the area, was demolished in 1990 to make way for the M80 Stepps bypass. Provanmill and Blackhill were known for being majority Irish Catholic and still to this day the demographics show that the areas, as well as nearby Royston (previously known as the Garngad), remain predominantly Catholic and still feature Irish republican marches annually. Stepps, Chryston And Muirhead (ward)
Stepps, Chryston and Muirhead is one of the twenty-one wards used to elect members of the North Lanarkshire Council. It currently elects three councillors and, as its name suggests, covers the settlements of Stepps, Chryston and Muirhead (as well as Auchinloch) with a combined population of 12,290 in 2019. It was created in 2007 as Strathkelvin, covering a larger territory also including Gartcosh and Moodiesburn (the eastern boundary being the M73 motorway) and returning four councillors. A nationwide boundary review in 2017 that recommended more representation for the area overall led to these communities being placed in a separate new ward (along with Glenboig from the Coatbridge North ward), with the remainder of the Strathkelvin ward renamed and returning one fewer councillor. Cardowan
Cardowan is a suburb situated in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, on the north-eastern outskirts of Glasgow. Originally built around Cardowan Colliery, Garnkirk fire-clay works and clay mines in the immediate area, Cardowan's proximity to Glasgow has been key to its expansion over the years, which has seen the former colliery site being transformed into a large scale residential development. Springburn/Robroyston (Ward 17) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Created as Springburn, in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and population (the latter by 20%), was renamed ''Springburn/Robroyston'' and returned four members. Millerston
Millerston is a district partially in the Scottish city of Glasgow and partially in North Lanarkshire. It is situated north of the River Clyde, to the north of the city's Craigend, Garthamlock and Ruchazie neighbourhoods, but physically separated from them by parkland and wooded areas. It is also home to the playing fields of Glasgow's St Aloysius College and Strathclyde University. Whilst part of Millerston belongs to Glasgow City Council, the other part is served by North Lanarkshire Council. The official Millerston boundary starts at Hogganfield Loch stretching all the way down Cumbernauld Road as far as Laundry Lane but in recent times, the area has been incorporated into the larger town of Stepps which is entirely within North Lanarkshire. M80 Motorway
The M80 is a motorway in Scotland's central belt, running between Glasgow and Stirling via Cumbernauld and Denny and linking the M8, M73 and M9 motorways. Following completion in 2011, the motorway is long. Despite being only a two lane motorway, parts of the M80 Stepps Bypass are used by around 60,000 vehicles per day. The M80 was constructed in three sections. The first section, from the village of Haggs to the M9 near Stirling, opened in 1974, followed in 1992 by the section from the M8 to the small town of Stepps. The section from Stepps to Haggs was completed in September 2011, though it partially opened in February 2011 when the Moodiesburn bypass, from Stepps to the M73 at Mollinsburn, was completed; the section of the A80 from Mollinsburn to Haggs was then upgraded. Balornock
Balornock (, gd, Both Lobharnaig) is a district in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Situated outside the city centre, north of the River Clyde, it forms part of the larger area of Springburn. Balornock shared the Red Road complex of multi-storey flats with the neighbouring district of Barmulloch; the 21 Birnie Court building (single yellow block) was in Barmulloch. The buildings were formally condemned in July 2008 after a long period of decline, with their phased demolition taking place in three stages between 2010 and 2015. Robroyston
Robroyston ( gd, Baile Raibeart Ruadh) is a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland, located around 3 miles (5 km) north-east of the city centre. To the north, it directly adjoins Auchinairn (part of Bishopbriggs) in the neighbouring East Dunbartonshire local authority area. The Glasgow neighbourhoods of Balornock and Barmulloch lie to the west, but these are largely separated from Robroyston by a nature reserve. Land to the east towards North Lanarkshire is open countryside, which has made the area a popular location for housing developments.
