North Donegal was a UK Parliament constituency in Ireland, returning one Member of Parliament 1885–1922. Prior to the 1885 United Kingdom general election the area was part of the Donegal constituency. From 1922, on the establishment of the Irish Free State, it was not represented in the UK Parliament. Boundaries This constituency comprised the northern part of County Donegal, consisting of the barony of Inishowen East, that part of the barony of Inishowen West not contained within the constituency of East Donegal, and that part of the barony of Kilmacrenan Kilmacrenan (), sometimes spelled Kilmacrennan, is a barony in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland. Joseph O'Doherty
Joseph O'Doherty (24 December 1891 – 10 August 1979) was an Irish teacher, barrister, revolutionary, politician, county manager, member of the First Dáil and of the Irish Free State Seanad. Family Joseph O'Doherty's father Michael O'Doherty was a prosperous entrepreneur from Gortyarrigan in the parish of Desertegney at the side of Raghin Beg mountain on the Inishowen peninsula, County Donegal. When he got married, Michael moved from Gortyarrigan to the town of Derry where he owned a hansom cab business and a chain of butcher shops, kept racing horses, traded in cattle, and supplied meat until 1916 for the British Royal Navy fort at Dunree. Joseph's mother Rose O'Doherty (née McLaughlin) inspired him to become a revolutionary. O'Doherty was born at his parents' home at 14 Little Diamond in the Bogside district of Derry on Christmas Eve 1891. 1918 Irish General Election
The 1918 Irish general election was the part of the 1918 United Kingdom general election which took place in Ireland. It is now seen as a key moment in modern Irish history because it saw the overwhelming defeat of the moderate nationalist Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), which had dominated the Irish political landscape since the 1880s, and a landslide victory for the radical Sinn Féin party. Sinn Féin had never previously stood in a general election, but had won six seats in by-elections in 1917–18. The party had vowed in its manifesto to establish an independent Irish Republic. In Ulster, however, the Unionist Party was the most successful party. The election was held in the aftermath of the First World War, the Easter Rising and the Conscription Crisis. It was the first general election to be held after the Representation of the People Act 1918. 1906 United Kingdom General Election In Ireland
The 1906 United Kingdom general election in Ireland was held in January 1906. Ninety-nine of the seats were in single-member districts using the first-past-the-post electoral system, and the constituencies of Cork City and Dublin University were two-member districts using block voting. In the election as a whole, the Liberal Party won a clear majority in the election across the United Kingdom and Henry Campbell-Bannerman was appointed as Prime Minister. This was the first time since the split in the Liberal Party in 1886 that they governed without the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party. John Muldoon (politician)
John Muldoon (11 July 1865 – 21 November 1938) was an Irish barrister and nationalist politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for most of the period between 1905 and 1918, representing three different constituencies in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Early life Muldoon was the third son of James Muldoon of Dromore, County Tyrone, and of Catherine Gahan. He was educated at a local school, at Queen's College, Galway and at the King's Inns. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1894 and became a King's Counsel (KC) in 1913. In 1903 he married Olive, daughter of Charles Whamond of Westport, County Mayo. Political career Muldoon was a treasurer of the United Irish League and a Director of the Freeman's Journal. 1900 United Kingdom General Election In Ireland
The 1900 United Kingdom general election in Ireland was held in September and October 1900. Ninety-nine of the seats were in single-member districts using the first-past-the-post electoral system, and the constituencies of Cork City and Dublin University were two-member districts using block voting. This election was the first fought after the separate organisations in the Irish Parliamentary Party re-merged after a split in 1891 between the Irish National Federation, which had opposed the leadership of Charles Stewart Parnell, and the Irish National League, which had supported his continued leadership. The IPP was now led by John Redmond of the smaller INL. In the overall election result, the coalition of the Conservative Party, which included the Irish Unionist Alliance, and the Liberal Unionist Party, was returned and the Marquess of Salisbury continued as Prime Minister. Thomas Bartholomew Curran
Thomas Bartholomew Curran (1870 – 1929) was an Irish barrister and an Anti-Parnellite/Irish National Federation politician who served in the United Kingdom House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituencies of Kilkenny City (1892–1895) and North Donegal (1895–1900). He was the son of Thomas Curran, MP for South Sligo from 1892 to 1900 and Mary (Coll) Curran (1847) of Derryfad, Creeslough, County Donegal, Ireland. Thomas Curran and his son, Thomas Bartholomew, owed their elections to the Irish National Federation to whom Thomas senior made an unsecured loan of £10,000 to fund their campaign in the 1892 general election.
