Portland, Maine, is home to many neighborhoods. Arts District Portland's Arts District is based around Congress Street in downtown Portland. The District includes the Portland Museum of Art, the Children's Museum of Maine, the Maine College of Art (MECA) and the State Theatre. The Sparrow House is an historic house at 35 Arlington Street in the Woodford's Corner and Back Cove neighborhood of Portland, Maine. Built in 1852, it is a well-preserved example of Gothic Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Description and history The Sparrow House is set on the northwest side of Arlington Street, a residential street between Forest Avenue and Back Cove in Portland's Woodford's Corner neighborhood. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a steeply pitched gable roof and vertical board siding. The side gables and a front-facing gable above the entrance are decorated with intricate bargeboard. Catherine McAuley High School
Catherine McAuley High School was an all-girls' college preparatory school in Portland, Maine. Run by the Sisters of Mercy, it was located in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. The school was established in 1969 and was named for the Sisters' founder, Catherine McAuley. Catherine McAuley High School was the successor school of two other all-women's Mercy schools, Saint Joseph's Academy (1881–1969) and Cathedral High School (1909–1969). The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) is the major sanctioning body for the sport of professional ten-pin bowling in the United States. The great fire of Portland, Maine, sometimes known as the 1866 great fire of Portland, occurred on July 4, 1866—the first Independence Day after the end of the American Civil War. Five years before the Great Chicago Fire, this was the greatest fire yet seen in an American city. It started in a boat house on Commercial Street, likely caused by a firecracker or a cigar ash. The fire spread to a lumber yard and on to a sugar house, then spread across the city, eventually burning out on Munjoy Hill in the city's east end. Two people died in the fire. Franklin Towers is a 16-story high-rise building located in Portland, Maine, at the corner of Franklin Street and Cumberland Avenue, rising to a height of . Construction was completed in 1969, and its primary use is residential. Schlotterbeck And Foss Building
The Schlotterbeck and Foss Building is an historic factory building at 117 Preble Street in Portland, Maine. Built in 1927, it is a particularly rare example of Art Deco architecture in Portland, the only one known by the noted Maine architects John Calvin Stevens and John Howard Stevens. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. Description and history The former Schlotterbeck and Foss building is located on the north side of Portland's downtown area, at the southeast corner of Preble and Kennebec Streets. The building is a five-story masonry structure, with a concrete frame and an exterior of buff brick with cast stone. The ground floor is finished in cast stone, while the upper floors are primarily brick with stone trim.
