North Dakota Highway 6
North Dakota Highway 6 (ND 6) is a major north–south highway in North Dakota. It runs from South Dakota Highway 63 in McLaughlin to Interstate 94 Business Loop in downtown Mandan. Route description ND 6 begins at the South Dakota state line, where the roadway continues as South Dakota Highway 63. It has two intersections with ND 24. In between the two intersections with that highway travels through Selfridge. North of there, it travels by Breien, and later encounters the eastern terminus of ND 21 turning right at that intersection before making a sharp left curve and heading north again. At the intersection with Morton County Road 136 it travels by Saint Anthony, then travels along the west side of the Morton County State Game Management Area. A sign that the highway is approaching its northern terminus is when it passes the Mandan Municipal Airport. McLaughlin, South Dakota
McLaughlin (Lakota: ''matȟó Akíčita or Makáȟleča''; "Bear Soldier") is a city in northeastern Corson County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 663 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Most Lakȟóta speakers refer to the town as Makáȟleča or Matȟó Akíčita. History The town is named after a US Indian Service Agent James McLaughlin, who supervised the Standing Rock Indian Agency from 1881 to 1895. He moved to Washington, D.C., where he was Inspector of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Department of the Interior. After McLaughlin's death in 1923, his body was returned here for burial. Mandan Municipal Golf Course
The Mandan are a Native American tribe of the Great Plains who have lived for centuries primarily in what is now North Dakota. They are enrolled in the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation. About half of the Mandan still reside in the area of the reservation; the rest reside around the United States and in Canada. The Mandan historically lived along both banks of the Upper Missouri River and two of its tributaries—the Heart and Knife rivers— in present-day North and South Dakota. Speakers of Mandan, a Siouan language, they developed a settled, agrarian culture. Heart River (North Dakota)
The Heart River is a tributary of the Missouri River, approximately long, in western North Dakota, United States. Course The Heart River rises in the prairie country of Billings County, in the Little Missouri National Grassland near the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It flows generally eastwardly through Stark County to Gladstone, past Belfield and South Heart, through the Patterson Reservoir and past Dickinson. It is joined by the Green River at Gladstone, and turns east-southeastward into Grant County, passing through Lake Tschida, which is formed by the Heart Butte Dam. Below this dam, the river turns northeastward into Morton County, where it joins the Missouri River at Mandan. Mandan is a city on the eastern border of Morton County and the eighth-largest city in North Dakota. Founded in 1879 on the west side of the upper Missouri River, it was designated in 1881 as the county seat of Morton County. The population was 24,206 at the 2020 census.
