North Dakota Highway 53 (ND 53) is a east–west state highway in the U.S. state of North Dakota. ND 53's western terminus is at U.S. Route 83 (US 83) in Max, and the eastern terminus is at US 52 southeast of Balfour. Max is a city in McLean County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 331 at the 2020 census. Max was founded in 1906. History Before 1906, rumors were circulating that the Soo Line would lay track close to Elbow Lake, north of Garrison, to obtain water for their steam engines. On this prospect, enterprising businessmen swiftly began staking claims in anticipation of purchasing prime real estate in a new town. A haphazard shack-building boom ensued on the surrounding ambling prairies. On August 8, 1906, a surveyor named J.G. Sheldrick filed a certificate to plat what would become the Max townsite on a grid. The Soo Line came from the south and would have east and west branches at a junction to be named "Junction" or "Junction City". However, people started calling it Max's Post Office, after Max Freitag, eldest son of Paul Freitag. Paul Freitag was a local farmer and the first postmaster. History Balfour was founded in 1899 when the Soo Railroad was extended to that point. The city was named for Arthur Balfour, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. McLean County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,771. Its county seat is Washburn. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on March 8, 1883, with areas partitioned from Burleigh, Sheridan, and (now-extinct) Stevens counties. The county was named for John A. McLean, the first mayor of Bismarck. The county organization was completed on November 1 of that year. Its boundaries were altered in 1885, in 1892, and in 1908. It has retained its current configuration since November 3, 1908, when a portion of its previous territory was partitioned to recreate Sheridan County (Sheridan had been dissolved on November 8, 1892, with its territory annexed to McLean). McHenry County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,345. Its county seat is Towner. McHenry County is part of the Minot, ND Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873, with territory annexed from Bottineau County. It was named for James McHenry, an early settler of Vermillion (in present South Dakota). The county government was not organized at that time, nor was the county attached to another county for administrative and judicial purposes. The county organization was effected on October 15, 1884. The county boundaries were altered in 1885, 1887, 1891, and in 1892. It has retained its present boundaries since 1892. When the county was organized in 1884, Villard was named as county seat. North Dakota Highway 23
North Dakota Highway 23 (ND 23) is a east–west highway in northwestern North Dakota. ND 23's eastern terminus is at ND 41 near Velva, and its western terminus at U.S. Route 85 (US 85) in Watford City. The only cities that ND 23 runs directly through are New Town and Watford City. It also runs through the unincorporated community of Keene. Other cities near the route include Makoti, Parshall, Plaza, Ryder, and Velva. Minot is north of the highway at its intersection with US 83. Route description ND 23 has its western terminus at a junction with US 85 and ND 200 in Watford City.
