North Carolina Labor Commissioner
The Commissioner of Labor is a statewide elected office in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The commissioner is a constitutional officer who leads the state's Department of Labor. North Carolina's general statues provide the commissioner with broad regulatory and enforcement powers to tend to the welfare of the state's workforce. They also sit on the North Carolina Council of State. The incumbent is Josh Dobson, who has served since January 2021. The original Bureau of Labor Statistics, the historical precursor of the present Department of Labor, was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1887, with provision for appointment by the governor of a Commissioner of Labor Statistics for a two-year term. In 1899 another act was passed providing that the commissioner, beginning with the general election of 1900, be elected by the people for a four-year term. Josh Dobson (born July 19, 1981) is an American politician, currently serving as North Carolina Commissioner of Labor. He previously served in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Early life and education Dobson was born on July 19, 1981 in North Carolina. He grew up in Avery County, and graduated from Avery High School. He then went to McDowell Technical Community College, where he completed an associate’s degree; Gardner-Webb University, where he got a bachelor’s degree; and Appalachian State University, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration. Frank Crane (labor Official)
Frank L. Crane (August 18, 1907 – December 25, 1973) was an American civil servant who served as the North Carolina Commissioner of Labor from June 3, 1954, to 1973. Early life Frank Crane was born on August 18, 1907, near Waxhaw, North Carolina, United States to James Thomas Crane and Mary Emma Lathan. He attended Marvin Elementary School, Weddington Institute, and Prospect High School, graduating from the latter in 1927. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1931. He then took courses at the university's summer school from 1931 to 1934 and attended classes in personnel management at North Carolina State College in 1939. Crane married Edith Peacock on January 1, 1938. The two had no children and separated in 1961. Crane subsequently married Mary Browning Comer. Forrest Shuford
Forrest Herman Shuford (June 3, 1897 – May 19, 1954) was an American civil servant who served as North Carolina Commissioner of Labor from 1938 to 1954. Early life Forrest Shuford was born on June 3, 1897, in Lawndale, North Carolina, United States to J. M. Shuford and Ella Copeland Shuford. He was educated in Cleveland County public schools and graduated from Piedmont High School in Lawndale. He enlisted in the United States Navy on June 3, 1918 and served during World War I. On June 3, 1922, he married May Renfrow. Though he was raised as a Methodist Christian, his wife was an Episcopalian and he switched to her denomination following their marriage. They had two sons.
