North Carolina Highway 177 (NC 177) is a route in the piedmont region of North Carolina. The road runs from South Carolina Highway 177 (SC 177) at the North Carolina-South Carolina border, through the town of Hamlet to U.S. Highway 1 (US 1) just south of Hoffman and just north of Rockingham. NC 177 was created in 1961 as a renumbering of NC 77. Route description SC 177 becomes NC 177 at the North Carolina–South Carolina border south of Hamlet. The road runs through an area with many farms and forest until reaching US 74 (future Interstate 74) south of Hamlet. The road enters Hamlet along Cheraw Road and runs through the downtown area. The road exits Hamlet passing near Dobbins Heights and a large railroad yard. NC 177 then follows King Street to its end at US 1 next to the Rockingham Speedway. Hamlet, North Carolina
Hamlet is a city in Richmond County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,042 at the 2020 census. History The area in Richmond County which presently includes Hamlet was originally known as Sandhills. The Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford Railroad was extended through the area in 1866. The first house was constructed there in 1869. In 1872 the land was purchased by John Shortridge, an English immigrant who intended on building a textile mill along a creek. He renamed the locale Hamlet the following year, supposedly in homage to hamlets in the British Isles. He planted a sycamore tree to celebrate the occasion, which stood until 1946. A post office was established in 1876, and that year Shortridge sold a parcel of land to Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad, which completed its own line through Hamlet by the following year. Richmond County is a county located on the central southern border of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 42,946. Its county seat is Rockingham. History Early history The earliest inhabitants of the land eventually comprising Richmond County were Cheraw Native Americans. The first European settlers in the area were Scottish Highlanders, who traveled up the Cape Fear River valley to find farmland. Rockingham is a city in Richmond County, North Carolina, United States, named after the Marquess of Rockingham. The population was 9,558 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Richmond County. The city is the home of Rockingham Speedway, formerly the North Carolina Speedway. It was a staple of the NASCAR schedule for nearly 40 years before the race was discontinued in 2004. Downtown Rockingham is currently being revitalized as a part of a ten-year plan named "Shaping Our Future: 2023". The city is currently experiencing an economic boom, with new businesses opening in the downtown area. Dobbins Heights is a town in Richmond County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 866 at the 2010 census. Geography Dobbins Heights is located at (34.903388, -79.691220). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. History Dobbins Heights was originally known as North Yard. It began as a largely black community in an unincorporated part of Richmond County near the city of Hamlet, with fewer than 1,000 residents. A black school, the Pee Dee Institute, was built in North Yard in 1908. Through the 1960s, many of the homes in the community were rented, and existed in poor condition with outdoor plumbing. Many streets remained unpaved through the 1980s. Due to its unincorporated status, North Yard's residents received fewer government services than other municipal residents and lacked direct political representation. Rockingham Speedway, formerly North Carolina Motor Speedway and later North Carolina Speedway is a racetrack located near Rockingham, North Carolina. It is also known as The Rock and previously hosted NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, ARCA Menards Series, CARS Tour, and UARA-Stars races.
