North American Society For Serbian Studies
The North American Society for Serbian Studies () is a non-profit scholarly organization based in North America, founded in 1978, aimed at promoting research and forward Serbian studies and increasing public awareness and understanding of Serbia and its culture and people, including the Serbian diaspora. It is a member of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). It publishes the peer-reviewed journal ''Serbian Studies''. North America is a continent in the Northern Hemisphere and almost entirely within the Western Hemisphere. Serbian Diaspora
Serbian diaspora refers to Serbian emigrant communities in the diaspora. The existence of a numerous diaspora of Serbian nationals is mainly a consequence of either economic or political (coercion or expulsion) reasons. There were different waves of Serbian migration, characterized into: #Economic emigration (end of 19th–beginning of 20th c.) #Political emigration (from 1945 up to 1967) of anti-Communist regime members, better known as the Chetnik Immigration #Economic emigration (1967 up to the 1980s) of mostly labourers with mid-level education or professionals of higher education #Political emigration (1990s) refugees of the Yugoslav Wars. The main countries of destination were Germany, Austria, United States, Sweden, Canada and Australia. The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) is a scholarly society dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about the former Soviet Union (including Eurasia) and Eastern and Central Europe. Rado Lenček
Rado Ludovik Lenček (3 October 1921 – 27 January 2005) was a Slovene linguist, cultural historian and ethnologist, who lived and worked in the United States. Serbian studies or Serbistics ( sr, Србистика / Srbistika) is an academic discipline within Slavic studies which is focused on the study of Serbian language, literature, history and culture. Within Slavic studies it belongs to the South Slavic subgroup. Main centers Main centers of Serbian studies are situated in Serbia, mainly in Belgrade, and also in Novi Sad. A specialized faculty in Belgrade, called the ''Research Center for Serbian Studies'' was created in 2010 within the Department of History (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. Various programs in Serbian studies are also taught at universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and some other European and North American countries.
