Norseman Road District
The Norseman Road District was an early form of local government area on the Western Australian goldfields. It was established on 25 January 1918 with the amalgamation of the original Dundas Road District (1895) and the Municipality of Norseman. The Dundas board reluctantly agreed to the merger, having opposed it for some years, with their small revenue compared to the municipality, pressure from the state Public Works Department and the promise of an increased subsidy proving decisive. These tensions carried through into the new council, with the final meeting of the Dundas board resolving to contest the inaugural election as a body in opposition to the adoption of a ward system for the new district, claiming that it "nullified the benefits to be derived from amalgamation". There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the ''Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. The Public Works Department (PWD) was the State Government Agency of Western Australia, which was charged with providing and maintaining public infrastructure such as dams, water supplies, schools, hospitals, harbours and other public buildings. ''The Kalgoorlie Miner'' (commonly known as ''The Miner'') is a daily newspaper circulating in the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Goldfields-Esperance region, in Western Australia. The Shire of Dundas is a local government area in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The shire covers an area of and its seat of government is the town of Norseman. Its territory lies between Norseman and the border with South Australia (including much of the Eyre Highway), and is between east of the state capital, Perth. History The shire was first established as the second Dundas Road District on 21 June 1929, when the Norseman Road District was abolished and replaced by a re-established Dundas board. (An earlier Dundas Road District had existed from 1895 to 1918 before amalgamating to form the Norseman district.)
