Norris City Cemetery
Norris City Cemetery is located at the corner of Stanbridge Street and Norris City Avenue in East Norriton Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Founded in the early 1860s, the cemetery came under township ownership in the late 1980s after falling into disrepair, and is now maintained as part of East Norriton's parks system. Its development was part of the so-called Rural Cemetery Movement, and as such was nonsectarian and was not overseen by any specific municipality. Most graves were populated between 1880 and 1920, but the cemetery has remained active since. The cemetery is most ordinary: there are few elaborate graves and only one notable person buried here, Ephraim Acker (1827–1903), a US Congress Representative. East Norriton Township is a township and a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 13,590 at the 2010 census. It is served by the Norristown Area School District. History On March 9, 1909, Norriton Township was divided into East Norriton Township and West Norriton Township. The Barley Sheaf Inn and Old Norriton Presbyterian Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography East Norriton Township is located at (40.148744, -75.33291). Ephraim Leister Acker
Ephraim Leister Acker (January 11, 1827 – May 12, 1903) was an American newspaperman and educator who served one term as a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1871 to 1873. Early life and career Ephraim L. Acker was born in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and the academy at Sumneytown, a village in Marlborough Township. He graduated from Marshall College in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1847. He was a school teacher for two years, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia in March 1852. He was editor and publisher of the ''Norristown Register'' from 1853 to 1877. He served as superintendent of the schools of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, from June 1854 to June 1860. He was appointed postmaster of Norristown, Pennsylvania in March 1860 by President James Buchanan and after serving eleven months was removed by President Abraham ...
