Nornes, Norway
Nornes or Norane is a village in Sogndal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Sogndalsfjorden, just east of its mouth where it empties into the main Sognefjorden. The village of Fimreite lies across the fjord from Nornes. The village sits about southwest of the municipal centre of Sogndalsfjøra and about east of the village of Hermansverk. Norum Church is located on the east side of Nornes. Norwegian County Road 55 runs through the village, connecting it to Sogndalsfjøra and Hermansverk. Commemoration In 1984, a memorial stone was unveiled by King Olav V of Norway to commemorate the 800-year anniversary of the Battle of Fimreite. The obelisk was erected in Nornes since the battle happened in the fjord between Nornes and Fimreite. Sognefjorden
The Sognefjord or Sognefjorden (, en, Sogn Fjord), nicknamed the King of the Fjords ( no, Fjordenes konge), is the largest and deepest fjord in Norway. Located in Vestland county in Western Norway, it stretches inland from the ocean to the small village of Skjolden in the municipality of Luster. The fjord gives its name to the surrounding district of Sogn. The name is related to Norwegian word ''súg-'' "to suck", presumably from the surge or suction of the tidal currents at the mouth of the fjord. Arne Nordheim
Arne Nordheim (20 June 1931 – 5 June 2010) was a Norwegian composer. Nordheim received numerous awards for his compositions, and from 1982 lived in the Norwegian government's honorary residence, Grotten, next to the Royal Palace in Oslo. He was elected an honorary member of the International Society for Contemporary Music in 1997. On 18 August 2006, Arne Nordheim received a doctor honoris causa degree at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He died at the age of 78 and was given a state funeral. The Battle of Fimreite (Norwegian language, Norwegian: ''Slaget ved Fimreite'') was a Naval warfare, naval battle fought on June 15, 1184, between King Magnus V of Norway, Magnus Erlingsson and the Birkebeiner supported Sverre of Norway, Sverre Sigurdsson. At this time in Norwegian history it was extremely common for there to be changes in leadership, and political coups were often conducted to establish a new ruler. This inevitably led to the naval battle between Sverre Sigurdsson and Magnus Erlingsson that resulted in Magnus being defeated and killed in the battle, and Sverre usurping the Norwegian throne. Olav V Of Norway
Olav V (; born Prince Alexander of Denmark; 2 July 1903 – 17 January 1991) was the King of Norway from 1957 until his death in 1991. Olav was the only child of King Haakon VII of Norway and Maud of Wales. He became heir apparent to the Norwegian throne when his father was elected King of Norway in 1905. County Road 55 ( no, Fylkesvei 55) is a highway which runs between the municipalities of Lom and Høyanger in Norway. Hermansverk
Hermansverk is the administrative centre of Sogndal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village serves as the seat of the County Governor of Vestland county. Prior to 2020, the village served as the administrative centre of both the municipality of Leikanger and also Sogn og Fjordane county (although the county capital is usually referred to as Leikanger, not Hermansverk). Originally, there were two small villages that sat about apart on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in Leikanger. Norwegian National Road 55 connects both areas. The main church for the municipality, Leikanger Church, was located in Leikanger, and the municipal and county administration was located in Hermansverk. Fimreite is a small village in the municipality of Sogndal in Vestland county, Norway. The village sits on the south side of the mouth of the Sogndalsfjorden, where it empties into the main Sognefjorden. It is located near the end of a peninsula about southwest of the village of Sogndalsfjøra and about southwest of the village of Kaupanger.
