David Richardson Medal
The David Richardson Medal is awarded by the Optical Society (formerly the Optical Society of America) to recognize contributions to optical engineering, primarily in the commercial and industrial sector. The award was first made in 1966 to its namesake David J. Richardson. He received it for distinctive contributions to the ruling and replicating of gratings, used to determine the transfer functions of lenses. There is a prize associated with the medal. Richardson received a graduate degree in spectroscopy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the mid-1930s. He was hired by Bausch and Lomb in 1947 to establish a grating and scale-ruling laboratory that became the world's leader in diffraction gratings. The lab, which was renamed for him in 1966, has since 2004 belonged to the Newport Corporation. Norman Liddle Brown (30 January 1885 – 9 January 1938) was an English professional footballer. An outside right or centre forward, he played for eight clubs in his career. Career Brown began his career with his hometown club Willington Athletic in the early 1900s. In 1904 he signed for Sunderland, for whom he made 27 Football League appearances and scored one goal. In 1906, he left ''the Black Cats'' and played for five different clubs over a seven-year period, before joining Blackpool Blackpool is a seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Norman Brown (born December 18, 1970) is an American smooth jazz guitarist and singer. Career Brown was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1970 and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. When he was eight years old, he was attracted to his brother's acoustic guitar. He was inspired by Jimi Hendrix and the Isley Brothers. When he heard Wes Montgomery, he began to play jazz. He attended the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. After graduating in 1984, he joined the staff and was an instructor until 1998. In 1991 he signed with Mo Jazz, a division of Motown. In 1992 he released his debut album, ''Just Between Us''. Collaborators included Boyz II Men, Stevie Wonder, and Kenneth H. Williams. The album was produced by Norman Connors, a jazz drummer and producer who discovered Brown. In 1994 Brown released the album ''After the Storm'', which gained critical success and was awarded jazz album of the year by Soul Train Music Awards. Norman Brown Jr. (16 March 1959 – 31 July 1983) was an Irish professional motorcycle road racer from Northern Ireland. Biography Brown was born in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland, where his father, Norman Brown Sr., ran a public house, "The Star Bar" or "Brown's Bar", overlooking the Clanrye River and Newry Town Hall. An alumnus of Newry High School, Brown Jr. started racing at the Isle of Man TT in 1982, and won the Senior TT at his first attempt. In 1983, he raised the TT lap record to 116.19 mph in the Senior Classic event for machines up to 1000cc. Brown also won the 350cc class at the 1983 North West 200 race in Northern Ireland.
