Norm Jamison
Norman Johnston Jamison (May 25, 1950 – October 3, 2017) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995. He died on October 3, 2017, of liver cancer at the age of 67. Background Jamison was president of his student council at Memorial Public School, but did not attend university. He was employed by Stelco for twenty years, and also worked as a representative of the United Way in Norfolk County, Ontario. Politics He ran for the Ontario legislature in the 1987 provincial election, but finished almost 9,000 votes behind the Liberal candidate, Gord Miller, in the southwestern Ontario riding of Norfolk. The NDP won a majority government in the 1990 provincial election, and Jamison was elected over Miller by almost 4,000 votes in a rematch from 1987. Haldimand County, Ontario
Haldimand County is a rural city-status single-tier municipality on the Niagara Peninsula in Southern Ontario, Canada, on the north shore of Lake Erie, and on the Grand River. Despite its name, it is no longer a county by definition, as all municipal services are handled by a single level of government. Municipal offices are located in Cayuga. The county is adjacent to Norfolk County, the County of Brant, the City of Hamilton, and the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Haldimand—Norfolk—Brant was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1997 to 2004. This riding was created in 1996 from parts of Elgin—Norfolk and Haldimand—Norfolk ridings. It consisted of the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk (excluding the Town of Dunnville), the townships of Burford, Oakland and Onondaga in the County of Brant, the Six Nations Indian reserve No. 40 and the New Credit Indian Reserve No. 40A. 1999 Ontario General Election
The 1999 Ontario general election was held on June 3, 1999 to elect members of the 37th Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The governing Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, led by Premier Mike Harris, was re-elected to a second majority government. It was the first election in which the Legislative Assembly of Ontario had a reduced number of seats. Previously, the province's riding boundaries were different from those used in federal elections. In the 1999 election, for the first time, provincial riding boundaries were redrawn to precisely match federal ridings, resulting in 27 fewer seats — and 27 fewer Members of Provincial Parliament — in the legislature. The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (french: Parti progressiste-conservateur de l'Ontario), often shortened to the Ontario PC Party or simply the PCs, colloquially known as the Tories, is a centre-right political party in Ontario, Canada. The PC Party has historically embraced Red Toryism and centrism, ideologies that were prominent during their uninterrupted governance from 1943 to 1985; government intervention in the economy was significant and spending on health care and education dramatically increased. The 1995 Ontario general election was held on June 8, 1995, to elect members of the 36th Legislative Assembly of the province of Ontario, Canada. The writs for the election were dropped on April 28, 1995. The governing New Democratic Party, led by Premier Bob Rae, was defeated by voters, who were angry with the actions of the Rae government, such as its unpopular hiring quotas and the Social Contract legislation in 1993. These policies caused the NDP to lose much of its base in organized labour, further reducing support for the party. At the 1993 federal election, the NDP tumbled to less than seven percent support, and lost all 11 of its federal seats in Ontario.
