Norken River
The Rooigembeek is a small stream in East Flanders, Belgium. It is a right tributary of the Wallebeek, which is a left tributary of the Scheldt. In its upper course, it is called ''Leedsebeek''. In British texts about the 1708 Battle of Oudenaarde, the stream is called ''Norken River'', possibly after the Flemish village Nokere (Kruishoutem municipality), some away. Its source is in Wortegem (Wortegem-Petegem municipality), west of Oudenaarde. The Battle of Oudenarde, also known as the Battle of Oudenaarde, was a major engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession, pitting a Grand Alliance force consisting of eighty thousand men under the command of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy against a French force of eighty-five thousand men under the command of the Duc de Bourgogne and the Duc de Vendôme, the battle resulting in a great victory for the Grand Alliance. The battle was fought near the city of Oudenaarde, at the time part of the Spanish Netherlands, on 11 July 1708. With this victory, the Grand Alliance ensured the fall of various French territories, giving them a significant strategic and tactical advantage during this stage of the war. Kruishoutem (, in French and English ''Cruyshautem'') is a village and was a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprised the towns of Kruishoutem proper, Nokere and Wannegem-Lede. In January 2018, the municipality of Kruishoutem had a total population of 8,086. The total area is 46.76 km2. Wortegem is a village and seat of the municipality of Wortegem-Petegem in the Belgian province of East Flanders. It is located about east of Kortrijk. Geography Wortegem is located in a hilly part of Flanders and varies in height from to . The village is located on the western edge of the Flemish Ardennes. History The village was first mentioned as Uurattingem in 964, and means "settlement of the people of Wardo (person)". Wortegem was a ''heerlijkheid'', but used to be overshadowed by neighbouring Petegem-aan-de-Schelde. The village developed on the road from Oudenaarde to Kortrijk.
