Nordic Combined At The 1980 Winter Olympics
Nordic combined at the 1980 Winter Olympics, consisted of one event, held from 18 February to 19 February. The ski jumping portion took place at Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex, while the cross-country portion took place at Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Biathlon Center. They then raced a 15 kilometre cross-country course, with the time converted to points. The athlete with the highest combined points score was awarded the gold medal. Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex
The Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex comprises a HS100- and HS128-meter ski jumps towers built for the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, United States, and modernized and lengthened in 2021, making them the only jumps in North America homologated for winter and summer jumping competitions. They are located two miles from Lake Placid, off the Old Military Road, in Essex County, New York. The complex is operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority. The sky deck on the 120-meter jump offers views of nearby John Brown's Farm and the surrounding High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Training and competition for Nordic ski jumping takes place year round thanks to a plastic mat out-run on the 90m jump. The Freestyle Aerial Training Center is located to the right of the base of the jump towers. Aerialists can train in the summer months by jumping into a 750,000 gallon pool. Rauno Miettinen (born 25 May 1949 in Kuopio) is a Finnish former Nordic combined skier. He earned a silver in the individual event at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Miettinen also won three Nordic combined silver medals in the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships (Individual: 1978, 3 x 10 km team: 1982 (tied with Norway), 1984). His biggest success as a Nordic combined athlete was at the Holmenkollen ski festival, where he won the event five times (1969, 1971–1973, 1978). Kerry Joel Lynch (born July 31, 1957 in Denver, Colorado) is an American former nordic combined skier who competed from 1979 to 1987. He is best known for his doping scandal at the 1987 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, West Germany in which he and his coach Jim Page approved a plan to give Lynch an illegal transfusion to increase his red blood cell count. Lynch would finish second in the 15 km individual event behind Norway's Torbjørn Løkken, only to be stripped of his medal when he and Page confessed to the scandal. Lynch would serve a two-year suspension as a result and was prohibited from participating in the 1988 Winter Olympics. He is the only Nordic combined athlete to ever been stripped of a medal either in the Winter Olympics or in the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Hermann Weinbuch (born 22 March 1960 in Bischofswiesen, Bavaria, West Germany) is a former West German nordic combined skier who won four medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships during the 1980s. In 1985, he won the 15 km individual and 3 x 10 km team gold medals, then followed it up two years later with two more medals (gold: 3 x 10 km, bronze: 15 km individual). Weinbuch also competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in the Nordic combined event, finishing 8th.
