''Norb'' is a newspaper comic strip written by Daniel Pinkwater and illustrated by Tony Auth William Anthony Auth Jr. (May 7, 1942 – September 14, 2014) was an American editorial cartoonist and children's book illustrator. Auth is best known for his syndicated work originally drawn for ''The Philadelphia Inquirer,'' for whom he worked .... Syndicated by King Features Syndicate, it ran for 52 weeks beginning on August 7, 1989 and running until August 4, 1990. Characters and story The strip followed the adventures of a scientist named Norb, who travelled the world with his assistants, Jacobowitz, Rat and the dwarf woolly mammoth Eugen. The team confronted curious adversaries, including Tibetan monks from a Los Angeles lamasery, mad disk jockeys and talking fish on an underwater floating island. Science fiction author Vonda N. Daniel Manus Pinkwater (born November 15, 1941) is an American author of children's books and young adult fiction. His books include ''Lizard Music'', ''The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death'', ''Fat Men from Space'', ''Borgel'', and the picture book '' The Big Orange Splot''. He has also written an adult novel, ''The Afterlife Diet'', and essay collections derived from his talks on National Public Radio. Many elements of his fiction are based on real events and people he encountered in his youth. Early life, family and education Born Manus Pinkwater in Memphis, Tennessee, to Jewish immigrant parents from Poland. William Anthony Auth Jr. (May 7, 1942 – September 14, 2014) was an American editorial cartoonist and children's book illustrator. Auth is best known for his syndicated work originally drawn for ''The Philadelphia Inquirer,'' for whom he worked from 1971 to 2012. Don Markstein's Toonopedia (subtitled A Vast Repository of Toonological Knowledge) is an online encyclopedia of print cartoons, comic strips and animation, initiated February 13, 2001. Donald D. Markstein, the sole writer and editor of Toonopedia, termed it "the world's first hypertext encyclopedia of toons" and stated, "The basic idea is to cover the entire spectrum of American cartoonery." Markstein began the project during 1999 with several earlier titles: he changed Don's Cartoon Encyberpedia (1999) to Don Markstein's Cartoonopedia (2000) after learning the word "Encyberpedia" had been trademarked. During 2001, he settled on his final title, noting, "Decided (after thinking about it for several weeks) to change the name of the site to Don Markstein's Toonopedia, rather than Cartoonopedia.
