''Nora'' is a 1923 German silent drama film directed by Berthold Viertel and starring Olga Tschechowa, Carl Ebert and Fritz Kortner. It is an adaptation of the 1879 play ''A Doll's House'' by Henrik Ibsen. It premiered in Berlin on 2 February 1923.Grange p.139 The film's art direction was by Walter Reimann. Berthold Viertel
Berthold Viertel (28 June 1885 – 24 September 1953) was an Austrian screenwriter and film director, known for his work in Germany, the UK and the US. Early career Viertel was born in Vienna, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but later went to work in Berlin. Viertel developed a reputation as a poet and theatre director, before moving into film work from 1922. As a screenwriter and director, he collaborated with some of the leading figures of the silent era of German cinema and worked on several influential films. '' Uneasy Money'' (1926) is a work of New Objectivity film movement. He was married to screenwriter and actress Salka Viertel from 30 April 1918 to 20 December 1947. Walter Reimann
Walter Reimann (2 June 1887 – 8 November 1936) was a German painter and art director. He was an Expressionist and member of the group of artists associated with Zurich magazine, Der Sturm. He worked on the production design of a number of films during his career, the most important of which was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Along with fellow members of the ''Der Sturm'' group, Walter Röhrig and Hermann Warm, Reimann created skewed, dreamlike sets that distorted geometry and indicated the interior states of mind of the characters. ''The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' was an international success and the production design has had a lasting influence on other movies - especially in the horror and film noir genres - since then. The Caligari design is echoed in the sets produced by Universal Studios for their series of classic monster movies in the 1930s. Ilka Grüning (born Ilka Henriette Grunzweig; 4 September 1876 – 11 November 1964) was an Austrian-Hungarian actress. Born in Vienna in the old Austrian-Hungarian Empire, she was one of many Jewish actors and actresses that were forced to flee Europe when the Nazis came to power in 1933. A respected and famous actress of her time in the German-language area, she was forced to play bit parts in Hollywood. Career German career At age 17, Ilka Grüning made her stage debut in '' Miss Julie'' and quickly became a famous stage actress. Grüning's first film, at age 43, was a German silent movie called ''Todesurteil'' in 1919. Next, she starred with Conrad Veidt in ''Peer Gynt''. Later that year, she and Veidt appeared in '' Die sich verkaufen''. She continued making silent movies in Germany into the 1920s.
