Noordeen Mashoor
Noordeen Mashoor (Nurdeen Mashur) was a Sri Lankan politician and Member of Parliament. Mashoor represented the Vanni multi-member electoral district in the Sri Lankan Parliament between October 2000 and April 2004, firstly for the National Unity Alliance then the United National Front (UNF). Mashoor returned to Parliament in April 2010, this time representing Vanni for the UNF. Muslim National Unity Alliance
The National Unity Alliance ( ta, தேசிய ஐக்கியக் கூட்டமைப்பு) is a political alliance in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1999, the alliance ceased to exist in 2010 when its remaining members joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. 2010 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 8 and 20 April 2010, to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 14th Parliament. 14,088,500 Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election at 11,102 polling stations. It was the first general election held in Sri Lanka following the conclusion of the civil war which lasted 26 years. The main parties contesting in the election were the party of Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse, the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the main opposition United National Front (UNF) and the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) of Sarath Fonseka. President Rajapakse was previously reelected as president in January 2010. As expected, the UPFA secured a landslide victory in the elections, buoyed by its achievement of ending the 30 year Sri Lankan Civil War by defeating the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in May 2009. 2000 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 10 October 2000. The People's Alliance (PA) government Kumaratunga had led for six years was facing increasing criticism on two fronts: a series of military defeats at the hands of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the country's civil war, and the faltering performance of the economy. The elections were marred by violence. Seventy people were killed during the campaign, including six on election day itself. Both the United National Party, UNP and SLMC parties accused the PA of election fraud and intimidation. As was the case for most elections since 1983, few ballots were cast in LTTE-held parts of the country. Results The PA remained in office but had problems to form a majority. The resulting deadlock led to the 2001 election.
