Los Ríos Region
The Los Ríos Region (Spanish: ''Región de Los Ríos'', , ''Region of the Rivers'') is one of Chile's 16 regions, the country's first-order administrative divisions. Its capital is Valdivia. It began to operate as a region on October 2, 2007, having been created by subdividing the Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. It consists of two provinces: Valdivia and the newly created Ranco Province, which was formerly part of Valdivia Province. Economy The region's economy is based on forestry, cattle farming, tourism, manufacturing, and services. El Ranco Province ( es, link=no, Provincia del Ranco) is one of two provinces of the southern Chilean region of Los Ríos. It is named after Ranco Lake shared by the communes (''comunas'') of Futrono and Lago Ranco. The lake is drained by the Bueno River, on which basin lies most of the province. Futrono
Futrono (from the Mapudungun: ''Futronhue'', meaning "place of smoke") is a city and commune in southern Chile administered by the Municipality of Futrono. It is located in Ranco Province in Los Ríos Region, on the northwest shore of Ranco Lake. Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Futrono spans an area of and has 14,981 inhabitants (7,647 men and 7,334 women). Of these, 8,399 (56.1%) lived in urban areas and 6,582 (43.9%) in rural areas. The population grew by 6.6% (933 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. Administration As a commune, Futrono is a third-level administrative division of Chile administered by a municipal council, headed by an alcalde who is directly elected every four years. Ranco Lake
Ranco Lake ( es, Lago Ranco) is located in Ranco Province of Chile. It is the largest lake of Los Ríos Region and the fourth largest in Chile. Administratively Ranco Lake is split into three communes; La Unión, Futrono and Lago Ranco. The lake hosts a series of islands, of which Huapi Island is the largest. Illeifa Island is owned by the affluent Edwards family. The western half of the lake is roughly circular while the eastern part features deep embayments. Geographically the lake lies in the Andean precordillera, the zone between the Chilean Central Valley and the Andes. The lake difers from other large lakes north and south of it by lacking a clearly visible large volcano in its surroundings. Precordillera is a Spanish geographical term for hills and mountains lying before a greater range, foothills. The term is derived from ''cordillera'' (mountain range)—literally "pre-mountain range"—and applied usually to the Andes.
