Nonesuch Records
Nonesuch Records is an American record company and label owned by Warner Music Group, distributed by Warner Records (formerly called Warner Bros. Records), and based in New York City. Founded by Jac Holzman in 1964 as a budget classical label, Nonesuch has developed into a label that records critically acclaimed music from a wide range of genres. Robert Hurwitz was president of the company from 1984 to 2017. History Founding Nonesuch was founded in early 1964 by Jac Holzman to produce "fine records at the same price as a trade paperback", which would be half the price of a normal LP. To achieve this he initially licensed European recordings of classical music as it would be too expensive to record new material. Originally the label concentrated heavily on chamber and baroque music, often with (then) unique repertory, and typically sold at less-than-premium prices. Saka Acquaye (2 November 1923 – 27 February 2007)Nii Addokwei Moffatt ''Daily Graphic'', via Modern Ghana, 8 March 2007. was a Ghanaian musician, playwright, sculptor and textile designer. Early life Saka Acquaye was born in Accra, Gold Coast (now Ghana), on 2 November 1923, the sixth child of his parents Regina and John Akweifio. He was educated in the Methodist School, Accra Royal School and then Government Boys Schools. He obtained a Cadbury Scholarship to enter Cadbury House, Achimota School. He washed dishes in the school's dining-hall so he could have extra food, since his parents could not afford to supplement his meals. While at college he became a champion hurdler, training without shoes and using his own primitive hurdles made from tree branches. Ramnad Krishnan
Ramnad Krishnan (14 September 1918 – 29 January 1973) was a vocalist in the Carnatic music, Carnatic tradition. Krishnan did his schooling in Ramnad in Madras Presidency. His elder brother Prof. V Lakshminarayana took him to C. S. Sankarasivam to get him started in music. Later, Krishnan's training under T. Brinda, Smt. Brinda combined with his manodharma made many of his concerts quite memorable. His rendering of rakti ragas, notably Begada and Sahana (raga), Sahana and ragas like Madhyamavati, Madhyamavathi and Sankarabharanam (raga), Shankarabaranam, among others are unparalleled. He served on the faculty of Government College of Carnatic Music in Madras. He was also a visiting professor at Wesleyan University. John Levy (musician)
John Levy (April 11, 1912 – January 20, 2012) was an American jazz double-bassist and businessman. Life Levy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1944, he left his family home in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to New York City where he played bass for such jazz musicians as Ben Webster, Erroll Garner, Milt Jackson, and Billie Holiday. In 1949, he became the bassist in the original George Shearing Quintet, where he also acted as Shearing's road manager. In 1951, Levy opened John Levy Enterprises, Inc., becoming the first African-American personal manager in the pop or jazz music field. By the 1960s, Levy's client roster included Shearing, Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Williams, Shirley Horn, Soul singer Jimmie Raye, and Ramsey Lewis. In 1997, Levy was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. Peter John Kay (born 2 July 1973) is an English actor, comedy writer and stand-up comedian. He has written, produced and acted in several television and film projects, and has written three books.
