Nogales () is a city and commune in the Quillota Province of central Chile's fifth region of Valparaíso. Geography The commune of Nogales spans an area of . Demographics According to the 2002 census of the National Statistics Institute, Nogales has 21,633 inhabitants (10,786 men and 10,847 women). Of these, 18,698 (86.4%) lived in urban areas and 2,935 (13.6%) in rural areas. The population grew by 15.9% (2,964 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. Administration As a commune, Nogales is a third-level administrative division of Chile, administered by a communal council (''consejo comunal''), which is headed by a directly elected alcalde. Rafael Inchauspe Méndez, known as Rafael de Nogales Méndez (October 14, 1877 in San Cristóbal, Táchira – July 10, 1937 in Panama City) was a Venezuelan soldier, adventurer and writer who served the Ottoman Empire during the Great War (1914–18). He travelled extensively and fought in many of the wars of his age. Education and first conflicts When a young man his father sent him to study in Europe and he attended Universities in Germany, Belgium and Spain, and spoke several languages fluently. Despite his education, Nogales felt more attracted to the military profession and he began to travel where the news of war took him. He took part in several conflicts in the last part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th: he fought for the Spanish against the Americans in the Spanish–American War. Eva Nogales (born in Madrid, Spain) is a biophysicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where she served as head of the Division of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Structural Biology of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (2015–2020). She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator. Nogales is a pioneer in using electron microscopy for the structural and functional characterization of macromolecular complexes. She used electron crystallography to obtain the first structure of tubulin and identify the binding site of the important anti-cancer drug taxol. She is a leader in combining cryo-EM, computational image analysis and biochemical assays to gain insights into function and regulation of biological complexes and molecular machines. Manuel Chaves Nogales (Seville, Spain August 1897 – May, 1944 in London) was a Spanish journalist and writer. Politically he was a moderate left-wing republican democrat who defined himself as "antifascist and antirevolutionary". As such, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Second Spanish Republic. Biography Chaves's father was himself a journalist, and he began working in the newspaper ''El Liberal'' in Seville whilst he was still very young. In 1922 he moved with his wife and daughter to Madrid and there he worked for the ''Heraldo de Madrid'' with other young promising journalists. In 1927 he won the most prestigious journalist prize in Spain, the ''Mariano de Cavia'', with a feature article on Ruth Elder, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. Nogales (English: or , ; ) is a city in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census and estimated 20,103 in 2019. Nogales forms part of the larger Tucson–Nogales combined statistical area, with a total population of 1,027,683 as of the 2010 Census. The city is the county seat of Santa Cruz County. Nogales is a municipality in the mountainous western region of the Mexican state of Veracruz. The municipal seat is the city of Nogales.
