No Monkey Business
''No Monkey Business'' is a 1935 British comedy film directed by Marcel Varnel and starring Gene Gerrard, June Clyde and Renée Houston. Synopsis After a music hall performer has his performing partner, an ape, confiscated by his financial creditors he persuades his assistant to dress up and impersonate the animal so that he can continue his act. However a series of embarrassments arise when they are invited to stay at a country house by a young woman who wishes to demonstrate to her father her theory that apes are as intelligent as people. Marcel Varnel
Marcel Varnel (16 October 1892 – 13 July 1947) was French film director, notably however for his career in the United States and England as a director of plays and films Biography He was born Marcel Hyacinthe le Bozec in Paris, France. Varnel started his working life on the Paris stage, soon becoming a director of musical comedies. In 1925 he moved to New York City working as director in several Broadway operettas, musicals and dramas for the Shubert family. This was followed by a move to Hollywood where he directed three low budget thrillers. In 1934, he moved to England and it was as a director of British comedies – initially working at British International Pictures, Elstree, then moving in 1936 to Gainsborough Pictures – where he produced his best films. Among the performers he worked with were Will Hay, The Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey and George Formby. He died in a car crash near Rake, West Sussex. Charles Ernest Paton (31 July 1874 – 10 April 1970) was an English film actor. He joined the circus at 14, and had early stage and music hall experience. He appeared in more than 100 films between 1927 and 1952, including ''Freedom of the Seas''. In 1927, he appeared in a short film, made in the DeForest Phonofilm sound-on-film process, singing "If Your Face Wants to Smile, We'll Let It In" from the revue ''John Citizen's Lament''. Walter Sydney Vinnicombe (26 September 1888 – 27 October 1970) was an English actor and comedian. He worked in film, television and theatre. Biography Vinnicombe was born in Willesden, Middlesex and began working on the music hall stages in 1912 and at regular theatres in 1938 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. His first film appearance was in 1928, and went on to appear in 213 other films. He worked up to his death, with his last television appearance in the comedy '' Doctor in the House'' in 1970. Alexander Field (actor)
Alexander Field (1892–1971) was an English film and television actor. Career Alexander Field first appeared on stage at the London Palladium in 1912 and in the following year at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester. He joined '' Sir Philip Ben Greet's'' Shakespearian productions and remained with them for some time. Field also played in some silent pictures before the First World War. He served in the war and, after demobilisation, he continued his stage and film careers. His stage work included a role in the original production of R.C. Sherriff's '' Journey's End'', directed by James Whale, at the Apollo Theatre in 1928. Fred Duprez (September 6, 1884 – October 27, 1938) was an American actor, comedian and singer who performed in vaudeville, phonograph record and film. He made phonograph recordings in the US and the UK in the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s. Most of the films he appeared in were British. He was also a writer, and wrote the popular stage farce '' My Wife's Family'', filmed three times in Britain, firstly in 1931; once in Sweden in 1932; and once in Finland, in 1933. Fred Duprez was born in Detroit, Michigan. He died from a heart attack on board a ship en route to England. He was the father of the actress, June Duprez. Hugh Wakefield (10 November 1888 – 5 December 1971) was an English film actor, who played supporting roles. He was often seen wearing a monocle. Hugh Claude Wakefield was born in Wanstead, Essex. He also had a distinguished stage career, which began at the age of 11. ''City of Song'' (1931) was his first film. After completing 1954's ''The Million Pound Note'', Wakefield retired from film acting. He died 5 December 1971 in London aged 83.
