No. 71 Squadron RAAF
No. 71 Squadron was a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) maritime patrol squadron of World War II. It was formed in January 1943 and conducted patrols off the east coast of Australia until it was disbanded in August 1944. History During the first half of 1943 Japanese submarines operated off the Australian east coast, sinking 16 ships and damaging several more. In response to these losses the Australian Government expanded the military's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) forces. Three new RAAF maritime patrol units equipped with Avro Anson training aircraft, No. 66, No. 67 and No. 71 squadrons, were raised during this expansion. RAAF Base Amberley
RAAF Base Amberley is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) military airbase located southwest of Ipswich, Queensland in Australia and southwest of Brisbane CBD. It is currently home to No. 1 Squadron (operating the F/A-18F Super Hornet), No. 6 Squadron (operating the EA-18G Growler), No. 33 Squadron (operating the Airbus KC-30A), No. 35 Squadron (operating the C-27J Spartan) and No. 36 Squadron (operating the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III). Amberley is also home to Army units making up the 9th Force Support Battalion (9 FSB). Located on , RAAF Amberley is the largest operational base in the RAAF, employing over 5,000 uniformed and civilian personnel. ''I-74'', later ''I-174'', was an Imperial Japanese Navy ''Kaidai'' type cruiser submarine of the KD6B sub-class commissioned in 1938. Convoy GP55 was a Convoy#World War I, convoy of Allies of World War II, Allied ships that travelled from Sydney to Brisbane in June 1943 during World War II. It comprised ten cargo ships, three Landing Ship, Tank, landing ships, tank (LSTs) and an escort of five corvettes. The Japanese submarine Japanese submarine I-174, ''I-174'' attacked the convoy on 16 June, sinking the United States Army transport ship and damaging USS LST-469, USS ''LST-469''. Two of the corvettes counter-attacked ''I-174'', but only lightly damaged her. The Australian military conducted an intensive search for ''I-174'' in the days after the attack in the mistaken belief that she had been significantly damaged. Australian Hospital Ship (AHS) ''Centaur'' was a hospital ship which was attacked and sunk by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Queensland, Australia, on 14 May 1943. Of the 332 medical personnel and civilian crew aboard, 268 died, including 63 of the 65 army personnel. The Scottish-built vessel was launched in 1924 as a cargo liner, combination passenger ship, passenger liner and reefer ship, refrigerated cargo ship and operated a trade route between Western Australia and Singapore via the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), carrying passengers, cargo, and livestock. SS ''Fingal'' was a Norwegian merchant ship of 2,137 tons which was sunk during World War II off the coast of Australia. Brief history ''Fingal'' was built at Moss Værft, Norway 1923. In December 1941, the steamer had been damaged by Japanese bombing when en route between Rangoon and Calcutta. In May 1943, ''Fingal'' was under charter to the Australian Government. She was sailing from Sydney to Darwin shipping cargo and ammunition escorted by , crewed by 31 men, mainly Scandinavian, apart from six Australians including two Royal Australian Navy gunners.
