Nizamettin Taş
Nizamettin Taş (born 1961 in Varto), also known as Botan Rojhilat , was one of the oldest military commanders of the PKK. He was born in Varto, Turkey, and joined the PKK in 1986 and became the military commander of the organisation in 1995. He headed the People's Liberation Army of Kurdistan, the military wing of the PKK and was a member of the PKK Central Committee. He also served in the PKK's Presidential Council. He left the PKK in 2004 after a fall out with concurring members of the PKK leadership and formed the Patriotic Democratic Party (PWD) together with Osman Öcalan and Kani Yilmaz. But the party was short-lived and did not become important. Varto
Varto (, ku, Gimgim, grc-x-medieval, Barzanissa) is a town and district in Muş Province, Turkey. The population of Varto city is around 13,000 with another 17,000 living in the villages. The largest population from Varto in Europe is in Berlin. History Some 5,200 Armenians were living in the district of Varto in 1914, including 600 in the town of Varto. Eight churches, 3 monasteries and 5 schools tended to their to spiritual needs. In June 1915 during the Armenian genocide, a great number of Varto's Armenians were massacred in the valley of Newala Ask. Varto was the site of major fighting during the Sheikh Said rebellion in 1924, and was the epicenter of the 1966 earthquake that killed nearly 3,000 people. Osman Öcalan (14 August 1958 - 15 November 2021) was a Turkish-Kurdish militant, politician, and ex-commander of the Kurdistan Workers' Party.
