Nixville, South Carolina
Nixville is an unincorporated community in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The community is on South Carolina Highway 3 east of Estill. On April 13, 2020, a tornado measuring EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale traveled across Hampton County, striking Nixville along its path. The tornado, which was part of the 2020 Easter tornado outbreak, killed five people in the Nixville and Estill vicinities and caused a significant amount of property damage. Hampton County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,561. Its county seat is Hampton. It was named for Confederate Civil War general Wade Hampton, who in the late 1870s, with the ending of Reconstruction, was elected as governor of South Carolina. The highway travels in a C-shape from a point approximately southeast of Varnville northwest and north to Barnwell, and then northeast to Swansea. Estill, South Carolina
Estill is a town in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,040 at the 2010 census. Geography Estill is located north of Savannah, Georgia, northwest of Hilton Head Island and west of Charleston. The major industries are timber and agriculture. History The town of Estill is located in the southern half of Hampton County. The town is named for Colonel John Holbrook Estill. Estill was formed in 1900 when the railroad, later Seaboard Air Line Railroad, needed a rail line between Augusta, Georgia and Savannah, Georgia. Enhanced Fujita Scale
The Enhanced Fujita scale (abbreviated as EF-Scale) rates tornado intensity based on the severity of the damage they cause. It is used in some countries, including the United States, Canada, China, and Mongolia. The Enhanced Fujita scale replaced the decommissioned Fujita scale that was introduced in 1971 by Ted Fujita. Operational use began in the United States on February 1, 2007, followed by Canada on April 1, 2013. It has also been proposed for use in France. The scale has the same basic design as the original Fujita scale—six intensity categories from zero to five, representing increasing degrees of damage. 2020 Easter Tornado Outbreak
A widespread and deadly tornado outbreak affected the Southeastern United States on Easter Sunday and Monday, April 12–13, 2020. Several tornadoes were responsible for prompting tornado emergencies, including the first one to be issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston, South Carolina. A large squall line formed and tracked through the mid-Atlantic on April 13, prompting more tornado warnings and watches. A total of 15 watches were produced during the course of the event, two of which were designated Particularly Dangerous Situations.
