Nixon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Washoe County, Nevada, USA. The population was 374 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reno–Sparks Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the seat of tribal government of the Paiute Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation and home to the tribe's Museum and Visitor Center. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. Origin Nixon was named in honor of Senator George Stuart Nixon (R), who represented Nevada in the US Senate from 1905–1912. Demographics At the 2000 census there were 418 people, 132 households, and 104 families in the CDP. The population density was 66.2 people per square mile (25.5/km). There were 144 housing units at an average density of 22.8 per square mile (8.8/km). Pyramid Lake Schools
Pyramid Lake Schools or Pyramid Lake School, a.k.a. Pyramid Lake Jr. Sr. High School (PLJSHS), is a tribal secondary school in Nixon, Nevada, funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIE). It is within the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation. The NCES classifies it as a public school. Its current building was scheduled to open in fall 2000. Prior to that time a tribally-owned building functioned as a gymnasium and classes were held in double-wide trailers; there were three total of the latter. George Stuart Nixon
George Stuart Nixon (April 2, 1860 – June 5, 1912) was an American who served as a member of the United States Senate from Nevada. Early life He was born in Newcastle, California. He went to work for a railroad company and studied telegraphy. Career In 1881, Nixon was transferred to Nevada, where he organized and became cashier of a bank at Winnemucca. He also built an opera house in Reno, a theater in Winnemucca and was one of the financiers of the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah, Nevada. He became a member of the Nevada Assembly in 1891 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1905 as a Republican. He was re-elected in 1911 and served until his death in 1912. He was the chairman of the Committee on Coast Defenses. On February 9, 1905, he joined the San Francisco Bohemian Club. Death Nixon died in 1912 and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Reno.
