Niscemi is a little town and ''comune'' in the province of Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy. It has a population of 27,558. It is located not far from Gela and Caltagirone and 90 km from Catania. Etymology The name Niscemi is derived from the Arabic word ''نَشَم neshem'' or its singular form ''نَشَمَة neshemeh'', this being the name of a particular type of tree. Main Sights * Santa Maria d'Itria: chiesa madre or mother church of town World War II During World War II, Niscemi was the location of ''Ponte Olivo Airfield'', a military airfield used by the United States Twelfth Air Force during the Italian campaign. Naval Radio Transmitter Facility Niscemi (NRTF Niscemi) is a transmission facility of the United States Navy at Niscemi, Sicily, maintained by the N92 Division of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Sicily. The facility houses low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) transmitter and antenna systems, and certification of the new U.S. Navy Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) ground terminals is in progress as of early 2015. Installations The joint American, Italian, and NATO facility houses an AN/FRT-95A Low Frequency Radio Transmitting System, hosts a USAF HF SCOPE Command, part of the High Frequency (HF) Global Communications System ( HFGCS) and a US Navy MUOS Ground Station. Santa Maria d'Itria is a Baroque-style mother church (duomo) in the town of Niscemi, in the Province of Caltanissetta, region of Sicily, Italy. It rises across the piazza from the church of the Addolorata. History At the site of the prior mother church of the town, which had been destroyed by the 1693 Sicily earthquake The 1693 Sicily earthquake struck parts of southern Italy near Sicily, Calabria, and Malta on January 11 at around 21:00 local time. Gela (Sicilian and ; grc, Γέλα) is a city and (municipality) in the Autonomous Region of Sicily, Italy; in terms of area and population, it is the largest municipality on the southern coast of Sicily.
