Ninox Natalis
The Christmas boobook (''Ninox natalis''), also known more specifically as the Christmas Island hawk-owl, is a species of owl in the family Strigidae. Closely related to the hawk-owls of genus ''Ninox'', which occur in Southeast Asia and Australia, ''N. natalis'' was first classified at species level by J.J.Lister in 1888. It was not until 1998, however, that DNA testing confirmed its status as a separate species from other owls. Distribution ''Ninox natalis'' is endemic to Christmas Island, a small Australian territory of about 135 square km situated in the Indian Ocean approximately south of Java. The flora and fauna of the island face on-going threats from both human activity and introduced species of plants and animals. In addition to these threats, ''N. natalis'' is restricted to a small range on this small island and is consequently listed as vulnerable species, vulnerable by the IUCN. John Gerrard Keulemans
Johannes Gerardus Keulemans (J. G. Keulemans) (8 June 1842 – 29 March 1912) was a Dutch bird illustrator. For most of his life he lived and worked in England, illustrating many of the best-known ornithology books of the nineteenth century. Biography Keulemans was born in Rotterdam. As a young man he collected animal specimens for museums such as the Natural History Museum in Leiden, whose director, Hermann Schlegel, encouraged Keulemans and sent him on the 1864 expedition to West Africa. In 1869, he was persuaded by Richard Bowdler Sharpe to illustrate his '' Monograph of the Alcedinidae, or Family of Kingfishers'' (1868-1871) and to move to England, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was married twice, and had eight children by his first wife and seven children by his second wife. Only nine of his children reached adulthood.
