"1963" is a track by English rock group New Order. It was originally released as a B-side to " True Faith" in 1987 and appeared on the ''Substance'' compilation of the same year. It was then released as a single in January 1995, in a radio mix by Arthur Baker. "1963"'s B-sides are all remixes of the title track or songs previously released. Lyrics In ''New Order Music 1981–89'', the band's lyricist Bernard Sumner writes a tongue-in-cheek account of the song's lyrics that relate it to the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy. Sumner facetiously theorises that Kennedy arranged for Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot his wife so that "J.F. could do one with M. Monroe". Monroe commits suicide when Oswald hits the wrong target (in reality, Marilyn Monroe died in 1962, over a year before the assassination took place) and Oswald is later shot by his boss (implied to be Jack Ruby), for "doing such a bad job and causing his hit-man business to go bust." ''Substance'' (also known as ''Substance 1987'') is a compilation album by English alternative dance band New Order. It was released in August 1987 by Factory Records. The album compiles all of the band's singles at that point in their 12-inch versions, along with their respective B-side tracks. The then-newly released non-album single " True Faith" is also featured, along with its B-side "1963" and new versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion". ''Substance'' was released on vinyl, double CD, double cassette and Digital Audio Tape. It sold over one million copies and became New Order's most popular and critically acclaimed album. ''Singles'' is a greatest hits album by English rock band New Order. It was released on 3 October 2005 by London Records. The two-disc compilation includes the band's singles released between 1981 and 2005. Unlike the CD version of earlier singles compilation ''Substance 1987'', the B-sides are not included. While ''Substance 1987'' aimed to showcase New Order's 12-inch singles, ''Singles'' instead features mostly seven-inch versions, some of which are rare and differ from the album versions. The album includes three early singles that have never appeared on CD in their original form: "Ceremony", "Everything's Gone Green" and "Temptation". Additionally, an edit of the "Rough mix" of the song "Confusion" was created exclusively for this compilation. One song, "Turn", was released on this album in a new edited form, despite never being a single. New Order (band)
New Order are an English rock band formed in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. The members regrouped after the demise of their previous band Joy Division due to the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis. They were joined by Gillian Gilbert on keyboards later that year. New Order's integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s. They were the flagship band for Manchester-based independent record label Factory Records and its nightclub The Haçienda, and they worked in long-term collaboration with graphic designer Peter Saville. Stephen Hague
Stephen Hague (born 1960) is an American record producer most active with various British acts since the 1980s. Early life Hague was born in Portland, Maine in 1960. Early career Hague started his musical career in the mid-1970s as a session keyboardist. He soon became a member of the band Jules and the Polar Bears and produced (with Jules Shear) the two albums and one EP, released between 1978 and 1980, by that band. He then branched out into producing work by other artists, including 1980s Sparks offshoot band Gleaming Spires, their first album being recorded on Hague's home 4-track tape recorder. This 1981 album spawned the Los Angeles radio hit "Are You Ready for the Sex Girls?" on the Posh Boy label, a recording subsequently featured in Hollywood features ''The Last American Virgin'' and ''Revenge of the Nerds''. Lee Harvey Oswald
Lee Harvey Oswald (October 18, 1939 – November 24, 1963) was a U.S. Marine veteran who assassinated John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, on November 22, 1963. Oswald was placed in juvenile detention at the age of 12 for truancy, during which time he was assessed by a psychiatrist as "emotionally disturbed", due to a lack of normal family life. After attending 12 schools in his youth, he quit repeatedly, and finally when he was 17, joined the Marines. Oswald was court-martialed twice while in the Marines, and jailed. He was honorably released from active duty in the Marine Corps into the Marine Corps Reserve, then flew to Europe and defected to the Soviet Union in October 1959. He lived in Minsk, Byelorussia, married a Russian woman named Marina, and had a daughter. "Spooky" is a song by English Rock music, rock band New Order (band), New Order. It was released in December 1993 as the fourth and final single from their sixth studio album, ''Republic (album), Republic'' (1993). The song would be their last single proper until 2001's "Crystal (song), Crystal". CD one featured remixes by Fluke (band), Fluke, while CD two featured remixes by Paul van Dyk and Tony Garcia. Several different versions exist, notably the ''Singles (New Order album), Singles'' (2005) album featured a different edit of "Spooky", which had not previously been available in the UK. The adoption of that version was problematic for some fans who felt that (like the Paul Oakenfold, Perfecto remix of "World (The Price of Love), World") the Fluke ''Minimix'' of "Spooky" was the best single version. Lionrock was a British big beat group, comprising record producer Justin Robertson, MC Buzz B, and producer, engineer, programmer and synthesist Roger Lyons. Lyons replaced recording engineer Mark Stagg in 1995. Their biggest chart success came in 1998, when "Rude Boy Rock" reached the top 20 of the UK Singles Chart. The group formed in 1992, and signed to Deconstruction Records in 1993. Their song "Rude Boy Rock" was featured in the video game '' FIFA '99'', as well as on the soundtrack to the 1999 film ''Idle Hands''. This song samples "Nimrod" (1965) by Jamaican reggae band Skatalites, later sampled by Damian Marley on the tune "All Night" from the album ''Welcome to Jamrock'' from 2005. Gina Birch is an English musician and filmmaker, best known as a founding member of post-punk rock band, the Raincoats. Born in Nottingham, Birch attended Nottingham High School for Girls, and later the Hornsey School of Art, where she formed The Raincoats with Ana da Silva in 1977. Following the first breakup of The Raincoats in 1984, Birch worked with experimental musician Mayo Thompson and his ensemble, Red Crayola, for a period in Germany. After this time, Birch formed the band Dorothy, with fellow ex-Raincoat Vicky Aspinall. The band was subsequently signed by Geoff Travis to Chrysalis Records. Following Dorothy's breakup, Birch matriculated at the Royal College of Art, where she studied film direction, and produced several dramas.
