Nikopol, Ukraine
Nikopol ( uk, Ні́кополь ; from grc, Νικόπολις, lit=City of Victory) is a city and municipality (hromada) in Nikopol District in the south of Ukraine, on the right bank of the Dnipro River, about 63 km south-east of Kryvyi Rih and 48 km south-west of Zaporizhzhia. Population: In terms of population, Nikopol is the fourth biggest city in the Dniopropetrovsk Oblast as well as among the top 50 nationwide. Nikopol Raion ( uk, Нікопольський район, Nikopolskyi raion) is an administrative subdivision (''raion'') of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine, with the administrative center in the city of Nikopol. Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant is a producer of Manganese Ferroalloy and related material located in Ukraine. Background The plant is one of the largest global producers of manganese alloys, and is situated in the Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine, close to large manganese ore deposits. The Battle of Nikopol, ''or Nicopolis'' ( Turkish: Niğbolu Muharebesi), was one of the early battles of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). As the Russian army crossed the Danube River, they approached the fortified city of Nikopol (Nicopolis). The Turkish high command sent Osman Pasha with the troops from Vidin to oppose the Russians' crossing of the Danube. Osman's intentions were to reinforce and defend Nikopol. However, the Russian IX Corps under General Nikolai Kridener reached the city and bombarded the garrison into submission before Osman could arrive. He instead fell back to Plevna. With the Nikopol garrison eliminated, the Russians were free to march on to Plevna. Nikopol Point (Nos Nikopol \'nos ni-'ko-pol\) is an ice-free point on the south coast of Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica projecting 650 m east-southeastwards into Bransfield Strait and linked by a spit to Vietor Rock to the south. ''The Nikopol Trilogy'' is a series of three science fiction graphic novels written in French by Yugoslavian-born Enki Bilal, published between 1980 and 1992.
